A recent survey by Glotech repairs found that nearly one-fifth of Brits don’t wash their washers regularly, putting them at high risk for bacteria like E.coli and Staphylococcus Aureus. Low-temperature washes and liquid detergents compound the problem. Low-temperature washes, which use less energy, are more beneficial for the environment.
However, more people realise that washing machines can be costly, and there is a huge increase in the use of dedicated washer cleaners.
Don’t just take everything as it is. The acidity of a Washing Machine Cleaner recently launched by a major brand has been tested by our lab technicians. Although it claims to remove limescale, the acid will not have any effect …. but the machine can’t see the limescale. The washing drum has 10x more acidity than citric acid.
Many posts are available on the internet about white vinegar and bicarbonate soda. However, this is not the best way. Every GCSE Chemistry student knows that acid and alkali cancel each other.
Two things are required to maintain your washing machine in top condition:
- Cleaning: Low-temperature washes and liquid detergents are not always effective in removing buildup. This encourages bacteria growth and the resulting odour.
- Limescale Removal: Mineral deposits can buildup on internal components, especially the heating element. Limescale can reduce the machine’s efficiency and reduce its service life.
For a hassle-free washing machine, we recommend the following:
Every wash
To every wash, add Soda Crystals. Liquid soap (formerly Liquid Soap Flakes) can be used in place of liquid detergent. This is especially useful for families with babies or sensitive skin. For delicate or waterproof clothing, Liquid soap is recommended.
Depending on the hardness of your water, you can use the following amounts:
- Medium – 25g
- Hard – 50g
- Very Hard – 75g
If you place the liquid in the drawer or the drum, the crystals should be placed in the drum.
Soda Crystals soften water to prevent limescale buildup on internal surfaces. It can also help with laundry cleaning. Borax Substitute can also soften water in areas with very hard water.
Oxi-Boost is recommended for tough stains. It can also be used to flush out any residual detergent or grime that could act as a breeding ground for bacteria that can cause the smell.
You can use white vinegar or dilute citric acid in place of a conditioner. This helps to keep your machine clean and free from limescale.
Monthly
To eliminate any bacteria and gunk, run an empty hot wash with 500g of Soda Crystals. It may take several cycles if you have never done it before. If you notice black spots or a worsening smell, this is a sign that the gunk has been removed and must be flushed out. This is why you need to run another Soda Crystals.
To clean the door seals and drawers of detergent, use White Vinegar. Bacteria and fungi can build up.
This video will show you how to clean your washing machines.
If you live in an area with hard water
You can use Citric Acid to clean your monthly maintenance if you have hard water. These maintenance washes can be performed fortnightly if your water is extremely hard.
You can run an empty hot washer with 250g of citric acid on alternate months to remove limescale. Limescale can lead to corrosion of heating elements and higher energy bills. It can also be a breeding ground for bacteria.
These easy steps will keep your machine free from limescale, odour, and odour.
Clean dishwashers
Many people ask us if Soda Crystals can be used to clean dishwashers. It’s best not to clean the hinges at the bottom that has become gunked up. Instead, use Citric Acid and White Vinegar.
