Schitt’s Creek – Catherine O’Hara, Moira Rose’s Most Divine Looks

Atherine Ola’s Schitt’s Creek character Moira may not have been a strong matriarch at first, but she was a style icon who gave and took –canonizing herself, one wig at time, as Mother Teresa of TV Looks. O’Hara claims that Moira’s impeccable style, sartorial confidence and sense of occasion were inspired by Daphne Guinness, the McQueen muse and theatrically dressed heiress. Moira was transplanted to the small town of Schitt’s Creek. She uses hair, makeup and clothing as armour, transforming her wardrobe into a more glamorous reality.

O’Hara said, “That’s exactly what Moira does.” She dresses up for every occasion and never forgets who she is, what she truly is and who she should be.

O’Hara worked with costume designers Debra Hanson and Darci Cheyne as costume assistants. Ana Sorys was the hair stylist, and Lucky Bromhead was the makeup artist. O’Hara drew on influences such as Soprano’s mobsters and religious leaders. Although the results were sometimes absurd, they were true to Moira’s stage presence and 24/7 vision.

Soros stated, “What Moira takes very seriously, we all take very seriously.” It was never a joke.

MOIRA GOES TO THE AMISH COUNTRY

Season two of “Finding David” sees David run away from Schitt’s Creek and take refuge at an Amish family farm. Stevie is saved by the Rose family when Stevie borrows his car and takes along his family heirloom bag.

O’Hara said, “This was…one the first Roses to drive somewhere. So, of course Moira dresses for that.” “You never know who you might meet.”

Hansen purchased the textured black dress from Lanvin for H&M. Bromhead followed O’Hara with an umbrella as he filmed, fearing that O’Hara would develop a bizarre tan. Chanel’s fingerless leather gloves were made. O’Hara recalled that the “ridiculously high heels” were “the last thing you should be wearing if you have to walk on country roads.” “Every time I got out of my car, I would say, “Johnny, please.” Being the gentleman he is, he always extends his arm.

Moira chose MAC’s Dubonnet lip colour, which was darker than her Ruby Woo. Bromhead explained, “It is important to wear a good daytime color when you’re looking after your son and the bag you are most worried about than your child.”

The hat was the real star, a Little Girl design Hanson elevated using her milliner background. She added small black feathers to the hat. It wasn’t enough. Hanson said that although it was unusual, it didn’t have the “a special milliner did so for her” look. Hanson said, “I found some old feathers with long hairs and stuck them in the bag in an unusual way.”

Hanson stated that when the creative team struck the right Moira tone–glamorous but a little eccentric –they knew instantly. “There was no hesitation. There was no ‘Oh! Can you find better?’ response.
