After a week of deep cleaning, including ripping out carpets, bleaching everything that stood still (and I rarely use bleach) and trying to discover where wires and smells came from we’re almost ready to move our junk into our new home. Sanders have been hired and Mr Thrifty has been a serious trooper when it comes to peeling off layer upon layer of varnish, paint and generally ugly flooring! When we peeled back the carpet in one of the rooms the boards looked great at first glance but we soon noticed huge amounts of spattered paint along with some stains which just wouldn’t budge. The boards in the sitting room were in solid condition but badly painted and very ugly so sanding was the only option for all of them.
We had no idea stripping paint from floorboards was A Hard Thing, why don’t they teach you this at school? So he went on in, all guns blazing, sanding floors in the painted areas which caused sander belts to fragment across a room but it’s a lesson learnt and stowed away for the future. Don’t try to sand paint, unless you like the smell of burning wood and black scorch marks! Now it’s time to decide between varnish, wax and paint for the floors or maybe just wimp out and try to find a cheap but large and pretty rug to cover our spaces. If you have any varnish etc. recommendations we would be forever grateful. Ideally we’d like something hardwearing and we don’t mind investing in something which will last a really long time. Oh and I even managed to crack open a tin of paint but so far it has only been white emulsion – we are a long way off colours!
