The average front-loading washer is about 180 pounds, and the average top-loader is around 150 pounds.
This average assumes a mid-sized washer. Washers with smaller capacities will weigh less, while larger ones will weigh more.
Large capacity washing machines can weigh as much as 230 pounds, so they are heavy to transport!
This has its benefits, too. You don’t want your washing machines sliding across your laundry room floor. The drum moves inside the machine during wash cycles, staying in place.
How can you move a heavy washing machine?
This section will show you how to move your heavy washer in just 7 steps.
First, you’ll need:
- Shipping bolts
- Appliance dolly
- Slip-bolt or Wrench pliers
- Bucket
- Blankets for moving
- Tape for packing
- Moving ramp
- To secure the appliance during transport, use rope, straps or cord.
Step 1: Empty your washer and clean it
To begin, empty the washer of all clothes and water. You can also clean it once more to make sure it arrives at your new home looking and smelling great!
Use a damp cloth to wipe the exterior, drum, agitator, soap tray, control panel, and lid of the machine. Next, run a wash cycle using homemade or store-bought washer cleaner.
Your washer will smell fresh and clean after the cycle is completed. Next, you can proceed to step 2.
Step 2: Disconnect your washer machine
Move the washer from the wall and then unplug the outlet.
Next, turn off the water valve to ensure that water is not connected to the washer. Grab a bucket and place it behind the appliance.
Use your wrench or pliers to disconnect the water hoses at the back of the washing machine. Then let any water that remains drain into the bucket.
Step 3: Secure the drum with shipping bolts
Your washer’s drum mustn’t move while it is being transported. This extra movement can cause damage to the washer.
This can be prevented by using the shipping bolts with your washer to hold the drum in place. If you need replacement bolts, you can get them!
Step 4: Protect your Appliance
Wrap your washer in shipping blankets to protect it further. Use packing tape to secure the blankets around the appliance.
Step 5: Load your washer onto the dolly
Your washing machine can be lifted onto a dolly with the assistance of at least one person. Use a strap, cord or rope to secure it up.
Step 6: Put it in your vehicle.
You can carefully roll the washer from your house using a moving ramp to descend short flights of stairs.
Next, roll the doll into your vehicle using the moving ramp. Then take the washer off the doll.
Secure it, so it doesn’t slip and fall while you drive.
Step 7: Unload your washer
Finally, load your washer onto the dolly and then bring it into your laundry room. Use a ramp if you need to manoeuvre the vehicle or any stairs.
