Cavity Sliders are a New Zealand-based company that has become one of the leading manufacturers of sliding door hardware in the world. Their attention to detail and thoughtful design have made them a leader in this industry.

What is a Pocket Door and how does it work?
Pocket doors are able to slide into and out of a pocket within a wall. They need a track with hardware and other components to be able to roll into and out of a pocket. Pocket doors were popularized in Victorian times, when they were used as a way to separate living and dining rooms.

Pocket doors can be used for many things.

Pocket doors are perfect for small spaces, where swinging door would be difficult. Installing a door pocket where a swinging one was installed can open up ten square feet! Pocket doors can be compared to sliding barn door in this way. Pocket doors are usually hidden within the wall. Barn doors, however, are always visible whether they’re open or closed. Pocket door bathrooms, pocket doors closets, and pocket door pantries are beautiful. They can also be great design choices. There’s nothing like sliding double pocket doors to enter a room.

Pocket doors are not available everywhere. If you plan to install the pocket door in a wall intended to support weight, special care will need to be taken. Otherwise, your local building codes may prevent it from being installed. The wall must also be thick enough to support the door, as well as any supporting hardware. A good baseline thickness for walls is four inches. Installation of pocket doors can be made more or less difficult by plumbing and electrical wiring. We recommend that you consult an expert when it comes to installing pocket doors. It’s not worth removing drywall halfway to find out that the wall won’t support the pocket door or its hardware.

Why should I buy a pocket door hardware set?

The installation of pre-fabricated frame kits for pocket doors is much simpler. Kits include all necessary hardware to install pocket doors. You don’t need to assemble different components. The kits can be customized on-site. Our partnership with Cavity sliders allows us to offer a pocket frame kit that is easy to install.

Other pocket door hardware kits are made from wood. The frame kit is extruded aluminium. Aluminum is stronger, which is crucial because installing pocket doors requires removing original wall studs. The frame of a pocket door made from a sturdy material will ensure structural strength and smooth operation.

How to install pocket door hardware and when?

Install the pocket door hardware and interior pocket doors during framing for new construction or major remodeling. This way, you won’t need to remove the dry wall and can measure the opening for the pocket door in advance.

Install pocket door hardware for a minor renovation before installing drywall. It allows seamless integration with the rest of the space, especially for painting. We offer DIY Pocket Door Kits to suit almost any scenario.

What type of pocket door hardware will I need?

All Pocket Doors require the following Hardware:

    • Pocket Door Frame: The pocket door frame supports the pocket section and provides stability to the wall, as the original studs have been removed in order to create space for the actual door.
    • Pocket door track. The pocket door track slides along the wall or ceiling and is mounted to the ceiling. Some tracks become invisible after installation, perfect for those looking to create a seamless look. You’ll find sliding barn door tracks mounted on the wall in this section.
    • Pocket door rollers. The carriage packs are also known as the rollers. They are the rolling parts that attach to the sliding door. The right carriage pack will depend on the weight of your pocket door. You can choose between a number of options, such as end stops, where the door will stop just before the track ends, or softstops, that allow the door close gently, without slamming. There are even double-action softstops, which work both for opening and closing.
    • Pocket Door Handles: You have the option of equipping your door with either a pocket handle that allows passage, or a lock for greater privacy. We offer a variety of pocket door handles and locks, including flush pulls and edge pulls. Other options include ADA-compliant handles with magnetic passage and pocket door keyed lock.
    • Floor guide: pocket doors require a floor guide just like cavity slider doors. It is important to align them with the track because they slide along a track. The Cavity Pocket Door Frame Hardware Kit includes an adjustable T guide.

Installing a pocket door: Tips and tricks

Installation is easier if you use a pocket-door hardware kit. Here are some tips on how to install pocket doors:

  • The rough opening of a pocket-door should be double the width plus an inch. The rough opening for a 30 inch door slab should be 61 total inches.
  • The door height is the sum of the length of the slab, the height of the track and the clearance required.
  • Make sure the pocket is square. Measure the pocket diagonally, from one end to the other. If both measurements are the same, then the pocket is square.
  • Make sure that the door frame and header lumber are square. The pocket door may open or close on its own if either of these conditions is not met. To ensure that your pocket door kit functions as intended, you want to make sure everything is square and level.
