Guidelines for a healthy septic tank
Since we started in the septic industry over a decade ago, we have pumped many local septic pumping in winchester. Many more than once. We get asked a lot about septic systems. One of our most frequent questions is, “How often should my tank be pumped out?” Some homeowners will know the answer. It’s whatever your town requires.
It can be difficult to track when your tank needs to be empty and how often. There’s a reason there are septic ordinances. If you live in an area that doesn’t regulate pumping every few years, it is important to have your tank pumped every 2-3 years.
There are two main factors when deciding how often your tank should be cleaned.
1. How many gallons does your septic tank hold?
2. How many people live in your household?
Below is a chart showing how often your septic tank should be pumped. It is based on these two factors. You should also consider:
- No matter if you have a garbage disposal
- How much water do you use in your household (showers, laundry and baths, power washing, cleaning and painting, etc.)
- How often do you flush certain things? Baby wipes, grease, paint, feminine products, paper towels, etc.
Here’s a guideline: Most septic tanks are determined by the number of bedrooms in your house. A 1000-gallon tank is most likely for a home with 3 bedrooms. A 1500-gallon tank would be for homes with 4-5 bedrooms. You may need to empty your tank more frequently if you have an older home.
Are you still unsure? Ask one of our technicians for information about your tank size and whereabouts at your Chemung County Septic Service visit. We are happy to help you mark the things so that you have a “blueprint” for your home. This can be used to keep track of problems and service dates.
