The Veterans Community Project (VCP), founded by a group veterans in Kansas City, MO, aims to end veteran homeless by serving in a way that no one else has. VCP Tiny Home Project created a village of 49 Tiny homes for homeless Veterans. VCP tiny homes are approximately 240 square feet in size and are free for homeless Veterans, regardless of their discharge status or eligibility for VA benefits. Each detail of these homes has been designed to meet the needs of Veterans, right down to the placement of doors and windows that will increase security for people with PTSD.
VCP Village is more than a small group of houses for the homeless. A central community center is located around the houses. It offers a wide range of services to Veterans who live on- and off-site. These services could include helping to set up a smart device for better communication with the VA, or securing financial aid in an emergency. VCP also has an outside resource network to assist Veterans with any kind of emergency.
VCP’s Case Managers and Counsellors recognize that each Veteran is unique and that no one-size-fits all approach works. Each resident is met on a regular basis by staff to address the root cause of their homelessness and to give them the tools they need to live a stable, independent life.
There is no limit on how long a resident can stay on-site. However, VCP homeless Veterans typically stay between 8-10 months and are ready to move on to the next stage. VCP helps Veterans find permanent housing solutions once they have met their individual goals. They also provide case management services for one year.
VCP Kansas City has assisted more than 4,100 at-risk Veterans and helped more than 40 Veterans transition from tiny homes to permanent living. They are currently expanding their program by adding more tiny homes for vets. VCP Villages are currently being built in St. Louis MO and Longmont CO.
