How to Remove Limescale from Toilet below Waterline UK

Limescale is something you can’t avoid when there’s water involved. Bathrooms are a haven of limescale, especially the toilet bowl.

Grubby toilets don’t look the way we want them to. You must keep your toilet clean to avoid making it difficult to use. These are some helpful tips to get rid of limescale from your toilet.

How to Get Limescale Out of Your Toilet

Your methods for cleaning limescale from toilets will vary depending on the limescale you have to deal with. Depending on how much limescale you have to clean, you may need to use different elbow grease. Let’s look at how limescale can be cleaned – I have also included natural methods because they are my favourite way to clean.

How to Get Rid of Thick Limescale

Natural cleaning is your best friend for decaling your toilet bowl, even below the waterline.

White vinegar. That’s it! You can now go shopping with a nice, large bottle of white vinegar. It will be a great choice for many household cleaning tasks. Just check out our list of 20+ ways white vinegar can be used to clean your home.

1. About 1-litre undiluted white vinegar should be poured into the toilet bowl.
2. It will work for about 3-4 hours.
3. You can scrub the sides and bottom of the bowl with white vinegar. To clean the sides of the bowl, you can either use your regular toilet brush or a Sonic Scrubber. This brush is only for cleaning the toilet. You won’t want it to scrub your kitchen.
4. To remove vinegar and stains, flush the toilet – hello sparkling bowl.

A little lemon juice mixed with vinegar can also be used to cut through limescale and improve the smell. Another quick natural cleaning method using powdered citric acids that I found on YouTube is:

Take Limescale from Below the Waterline

It can be difficult to clean the U-bend and the waterline area. With most toilet brushes, these spots are difficult to reach, and you may see unsightly stains from certain angles.

A flexible toilet brush can be a great investment. It will make it easier to clean your toilet without using the water. This one by Joseph Joseph is quite expensive, but the flexible D-shaped head allows you to reach every spot. The silicone bristles are also included!

This will remove limescale and stains. However, if your cleaning method involves bleach, add some bicarbonate soda to the water. Then, use the bleach to clean the rest of the bowl. You can leave this in the bowl for a while until the stains have disappeared (or almost gone). Then, you can give the bowl a quick scrub using the toilet brush before flushing.
