Because it isn’t every day you graduate, many people will not know what to wear. You want it to be unique and perfect. While some people may go all out and wear a dress appropriate for prom, others might just be comfortable with jeans and a casual shirt. These are both wrong!

1. Don’t wear long floor-length ‘prom’ dresses under your gown
Your graduation gown won’t likely touch the ground, so be sure to keep it off the ground. There will be a lot of walking around the graduation stadium and across the stage. You might fall on your long dress or have trouble keeping it up if you are wearing it too high. Don’t wear a dress that is too long for the floor!
If you are unsure, check out your school’s dress code. Some schools may still require a dress code for graduation ceremonies. Follow the dress code to avoid getting in trouble. You don’t need to worry about wearing a backless dress or one with no sleeves, as your gown will be on top of it the entire time. After the ceremony, your only chance to take off your gown will be afterwards. This brings us to the next point.

After the ceremony, you may go out for dinner or lunch. When you take off your gown, make sure you are comfortable and confident.
- A dress with pockets is a good choice!
You won’t have a wallet or purse during the ceremony. However, your phone will be needed to call or text your friends and family after the ceremony. After the ceremony, it will be chaotic, and you will need help finding your family/friends. Consider getting a dress with pockets to store your phone after the ceremony.
- Wear appropriate clothing for the weather
Wear something warmer, such as a thicker, longer-sleeved dress in winter. Wear something cooler if it’s spring or summer – a backless or sleeveless gown.
- Accessorize with accessories to add style
You can wear a necklace, bracelet, or earrings. Consider wearing something visible from the outside of your gown during the ceremony.
- Your hair should be different.

- Do your makeup
You don’t have to be a huge makeup artist to enhance your facial features. It’s possible to do it in a way that doesn’t look like you are wearing makeup.
- Comfortable formal shoes are a good choice.
You will need shoes that you are comfortable in and shoes that can match your outfit. Wear heels if you are comfortable wearing them. Flats are also acceptable. Flats are also acceptable, but they should be formal and not casual shoes.
