This weekend we got out and about to pick our own in Manchester. Alright, alright, not Manchester but pretty close. We went to a Pick Your Own farm not far from Manchester in Winwick, Warrington, specifically Kenyon Hall Farm. It took about 20 minutes to drive there from South Manchester, once there we were greeted by fields upon fields, row upon row of soft fruits and summer veggies to pick.
The weather held off long enough for us to stomp around the strawberries, raspberries, tayberries, gooseberries and garden peas. With each berry added to the basket the idea of a Victoria Sponge or Pavlova planted firmly in the mind. The peas pulled off the stalk reminding us of the pop upon podding them. A Saturday spent picking and plucking for a Sunday feast with friends and family. Plopping another dozen strawberries in the pot meant a mental note to buy thick, gloopy cream. Clearing out the first of their raspberries gave us plans to crush them up and add them to cocktails this evening. Are you picking your own this summer? Where do you go? Are you lucky enough to have space to grow your own fruit and veg?Don’t forget to check out a behind the scenes snippet from Today at Thrifty Towers.
