Would you wear £3.99 perfume?

Recently I neared the end of my current perfume Coco Mademoiselle, boo hiss boo. Just as I was about to stump up a small fortune for a big bottle to see me through to Christmas, or investigate new perfumes, I received a text message from my friend which read

'Did you know Lidl do a perfume which smells a lot like your Chanel perfume?'

Say what now?

I had a little google and it turns out lots of people, including Klee have found Lidl's Suddenly Madame Glamour, hilarious name aside, to be remarkably similar to Chanel's easy to wear scent Coco Mademoiselle. I had to check this out. I hotfooted it (technical term) down to my nearest Lidl in the hope of finding a bottle. I thought I'd need luck on my side because the ladies of blogland have found it hard to track down but the shelves of my local shop were full of the stuff, I need not have worried.

The packaging is nothing to rave about, it's neither here nor there to be honest but seeing as I can't capture a scent in a photograph you'll have to make do with photos of the packaging.

Now to the scent. Just a quick sniff from the bottle and I thought it remarkably similar to the Chanel and sprayed into the air, again remarkably similar. The real test is on the skin. Could the Lidl match up to the Chanel?

I sprayed Suddenly Madame Glamour on my right arm and the very last of my Coco Mademoiselle on my left and allowed them to develop during the day. I'm pretty sure this isn't a technical or scientific way of doing a scent test and I'm sorry no white jackets and goggles were worn to conduct the experiment. Ommmvvv.

They smelt very similar when first applied, sisters who are mistaken for twins a lot but when you take a good look at them there is a couple of years difference and one has a longer nose. That kind of similarity, y'know?
On my skin the oriental notes in the Chanel play louder than in the Lidl for the first 20 mintues or so. I can detect the citrus a lot more in the Lidl but I like that for summer. As the day wore on the difference became harder to detect and if I hadn't written down which arm was wearing which scent (yes my memory is shocking) I probably wouldn't have been able to tell the difference after 4 hours worth of wear on a warm day.

Would I compare the two?
Yes. I think they are very similar, especially once they've worn in during the day.
Would I buy either again?
Hmmmm I think I'd buy the Lidl before I buy the Chanel. Whilst I like Coco Mademoiselle I don't think of it in any way near as luxurious as other Chanel perfumes (I think that may just be the way the notes play out on my skin) and at £61 I'd rather buy something which excites me and drives me a bit batty than something I like but isn't me, me, me.

At £3.99 (for 50ml) I can afford to have a bit of a play with fragrance and yes it might be from Lidl but hey...I don't care.

Would you buy and wear perfume from Lidl? Have you tried any bargain basement perfumes?

Edit - Some people have asked about the Lidl perfume lasting. I find the lasting time of perfume differs greatly from person to person and perfume doesn't last especially long on me. I've worn the Lidl perfume 3 times now and it has lasted for arounc 6 hours each time which is about the same as the Chanel perfume for me.

Brilliant Bootsale Buys

Bootsale seasons is in full swing and we've hit a few over the weekends. Strangely, I've also come across a fair number of mid-week bootsales - I always thought they were a weekend thing, turns out not-s-much. So I've been taking myself off on little bus and train trips to find some goodies.

Here are some of my favourite bootsale goodies from the past week or so.

The four items in the first photograph came to a total of £1.25 from the same seller. I've found myself starting a little collection of globes recently, there's something about them which draws me in. This one isn't vintage, in fact I think it is a smaller version of a John Lewis one I bought for my God Son, but for 50p I couldn't say no. The candle sticks, ah the candle sticks. I've developed more than a collection of candle sticks, Mr Thrifty would call it an obsession - he can shut up. I can't resist them, especially if they are coloured. Who doesn't want a little forest of candlesticks dotted along a shelf?

This gorgeous mantle clock was 50p. You read that right, 50p. Utterly crazy. Sure, it needs a good clean and a new key for winding but 50p? Aaaaaamazing. Isn't she beautiful? I shall call her Cassandra.

This slice of kitsch-y Catholic fabulous-ness set me back a hefty £1.75. Cue sucky-teeth-builder-giving-a-quote noise. It is light as a feather and I feel the need to stick magnets to the back and have it cover up our ugly boiler but Mr Thrifty - he say no.

I picked up these cufflinks for Mr Thrifty for 25p. Everything on the stall was 25p, everything. So I picked up a fist full of necklaces and got the hell outta there ~~with a commando roll~~ before they realised their mistakes. I've found some amazing clothes and revamped my wardrobe for about £4.78 too, but I'll share them with you soon.

5 Thrifty Storage Ideas

In the current economic climate everyone is trying hard to save themselves a bit of money. Of course, there are some obvious money-saving tips. Using comparison sites such as Money Supermarket will make sure you're not missing out on the latest financial deals and products. But when it comes to finding ways to keep your house tidy and organised, sticking to a budget can be tricky.

However, there are a number of ways to find extra storage ideas in and around your house that don't have to break the bank. In fact, some options won't even cost you a penny.

Grab Yourself a Bargain

If you do have a small budget for your storage but can't quite afford anything new, consider heading off to your nearest flea market or jumble sale. Keep your eyes peeled for old trunks, chests or even unwanted toy boxes. If they don't look too great at first, think about giving them a fresh coat of paint or decorating them.

Trawling through car boot sales, the local paper or online auction sites could net you a bargain, such as a piece of unique furniture that has character.

Getting hold of some simple bookshelf units is another great option and they can be used in any room in the house. The simpler they are, the better – and cheaper – because using them for family photos, treasured knick-knacks or even CDs, DVDs and magazines can give them a new lease of life.

If bookcases threaten to take up too much room, go for simple shelves instead. They offer extra storage space for anything, not just books and take up very little space if you have a smaller area. You can paint them to suit the colours or décor of your chosen room.

Simple Storage Ideas

Hooks are another great option for storage and are perfect for hiding coats, clothes or even sacks full of toys for the kids' rooms. Hooks come in all kinds of colours and sizes, are really easy to put up and can go absolutely anywhere. Use them to fill those nooks and crannies, such as the unused space under the stairs, the backs of doors and even inside wardrobes.

If you really can't afford to buy anything new or second hand, then try to have a think about unused space around your house. The more obvious choices include under the bed or on the tops of wardrobes, which are great for storing things such as bedding, magazines, board games or work papers that you don't necessarily want to put on display.

You could even fill some cheap wicker baskets or colourful plastic tubs with all the little bits and bobs that don't have anywhere to live and display them on top of kitchen units.

Finally, if you're feeling particularly creative and don't mind a bit of collecting, start saving up all those cardboard boxes that usually get thrown out. Decorate them in funky coloured papers, including the lids and then create a wall of boxes.

Depending on the size of your boxes, you can store pretty much anything and the colourful designs will look fantastic in children's bedrooms or a family sitting room.

Thrifty Pleasures

Bare feet on our cold front steps, warm sun on my face for a few short minutes and toast slathered in homemade raspberry jam. One of the thriftiest pleasures I've had in a long time.

Taking time out to spend time enjoying what you already have, what you're being given that day, the free stuff is so important. I think doing so allows you to appreciate money and the fact we don't need to spend a small fortune to live a happy life.

Sorry there's no money saving tip here today, see this as your cue to take some 'me' time and do something free at home. Do you ever take time out for yourself?

How to store boots

Summer is here ~~and shall remain here for the next 3 hours~~ so it is time to shake off the warm, cosy boots and reclaim your summer shoes, bare those toes! But don't just shove those boots into a cupboard, store them nicely so they're ready to pull out and wear come autumn.

1. Give them a good wipe and clean with a wet cloth.
2. Dry thoroughly.
3. Take a rolled up newspaper and stuff inside the leg of the boot.

Your boots should now stand up in the back of your wardrobe unaided. The legs shouldn't fall down and crease causing aging and cracks. You're also saving money because you don't have to splash out on special boot tree thingymagjigs.

What's in my (organised) bag?

I feel like there is an unwritten rule - bloggers must do a 'what's in my bag' post once a year. I've done two in the past, here and here and they've shown my handbags to be messy, over filled black holes but oh me, oh my I've grown, I've changed. I've become one of those women with an organised handbag.

Don't hate me. I've come to learn if I have a small bag it can't get too messy whereas when I take out a large bag I just fill it with more rubbish and it turns into a deep, dark, pit of despair.

A few months ago I bought one of these handbag organisers from eBay (they come in lots of colours and arrived at Thrifty Towers, from Hong Kong in under 2 weeks - ace) and my life seems to be operating on a whole new organisation level. Loving it.

It has lots of little compartments and zippy sections so everything has a place to live and I never have to instigate a huge search for my keys or a pen. Plus I can swap handbags on a regular basis without having to worry if I've transferred everything I need because I just lift the organiser doodah out and know everything is neatly packed inside it. It is full blow love, folks.

Everything in those two photos above slots neatly into the outside pockets. I find it so useful knowing where everything is and I no longer have to empty out the contents of my bag on a train. No more tampons and lipsticks flung across the carriage, so that's quite nice.

The centre compartment has just enough room for my purse, a book and my sunglasses. The zipped pockets keep my brolly and Opal Fruits (I can't bring myself to say Starburst without flinching) neat and tidy.

Reusable Gift Packaging

One of my chums recently turned ~~sulk~~*gasp* 25 and naturally I gave her a gift - a vintage necklace. I wanted a nice little box to wrap up in but every shop seemed to be charging £4 for a teeny tiny box. What on earth is up with that?

So rather than forking out the price of an all day bus ticket for ONE BOX, I decided to use something I already had at my disposal. Instead of chucking out a body lotion tub, I peeled off the stickers, washed it out and lined it with tissue paper (which had previously been wrapped around a gift I'd been given) before finishing it off with a big fat bow using ribbon which had been wrapped around some jim jams I'd recently bought.

I'm sure if you're crafty you could do something far more creative, but hey I'm not. My friend thought it was rather clever and now keeps her spare buttons in the pot. Huzzah and hurrah for reusing.

Anyway, I'm always up for finding well priced items and great deals so I'm going to share my favourite eBay shops and the reasons I love them in the hope you'll share your favourite eBay shops or sellers in the comments. On the button with current trends and great prices. However the sizing can be a bit odd, (since when was a size 10 a large?) so it is well worth having a good look at measurements.

L-U-S-H
Great shoes, a really diverse selection and great prices. Plus they get them in the post super quick. I really fancy these for my friend's hen night.

Linda's Stuff
I LOVE this shop. One of the most professional and comprehensive on the site, Linda's Stuff sells designer items and if you live in America she'll even send round a UPS guy to pick up your items and sell them on for you. Items are expensive but if you're searching for a specific item for your collection you might just be able to pick it up here.

Indie Cult Vintage
Seriously, I cannot explain to you how good this shop is. Hard to find and beautiful vintage goodies from various eras at pretty good prices. Not charity shop prices but good prices when you consider the heritage and condition of most of the pieces. My current favourite has to be this tie dye dress.

- The Coveted have a great list of sellers and shops covering fashion, mostly American but still well worth a look.

Make or Take
Great shop selling a variety of things but I particularly love their selection of interesting and cool cookie cutters.

AATextile
Really well priced cushion covers, duvets and bed linen sets. Whilst these flock cushion covers aren't really my thing I know a lot of people who love that type of thing so I'm planning to buy a few for Christmas gifts because less than £3 seems great.

W. Armstrong & Son
These guys are vintage specialists and I particularly love their fabric selections. What home shouldn't be swathed in barkcloth and kitsch teatowels?

From Then to Now
If you're into shabby chic, retro and kitsch I have a funny feeling you might like this shop. Again, great prices and I've been buying a few bits and bobs to put away for Christmas and birthday gifts. I particularly like this little polka dot bird shaped hook - I just wish we were allowed to drill into our walls because I'm seeing a line of these in my spare room.

Craft

Ness380
Just about anything craft related from ribbon through to jewellery making supplies. I've bought dozens of things from this seller and never had a single one go missing in the post or arrived damaged. Postage tends to be free and the stock is well priced.

Buy in coins
Items can take a while to get to you, however the price is so cheap it kind of makes up from it. They are my go to seller for metal studs.

Times they are a changin'

Life is a funny one, eh? One minute everything is all well and good, the next things are haywire and it is all change. Apart from really terrible events, I really rather enjoy the chop and change and try to embrace changes as much as I can. Last year I gave up my job almost over night and went completely freelance until my previously employer invited me back with an offer I couldn't refuse.

Well things are soon to change again, cor blimey. Mr Thrifty and I have been investigating something and going through a secret process for a couple of years now and we've finally had some good news. I can't share exactly what that is for quite some time, sorry to be a tease, but safe to say it will be a MASSIVE change to our lives (no, I'm not pregnant). It is A Good Thing though. Scary but so, so good.

When this project (it isn't really a project as such but it seems the safest thing to say without giving too much away) finally comes off I'll be spending a lot more time at home, giving up my job and cutting back on a lot of freelance. I have no plans to give up my blog, I actually have big plans to spend a bit more time on it. As such I'm going to rely on blogging as my mini source of income, so I hope you can be supportive and understanding if things change a wee bit around here. Don't worry I'll still be blogging just as frequently (maybe even more) and about the same topics I just plan for *this*, good old blogging, to be my 'thing' now/in time to come. It will allow me to spend time enjoying the 'project' and to be at home.

When I spoke at CybHer over the weekend (I'll make my talk available online soon) lots of people said I should give full time blogging a real go. I had so many positive and kind comments about my little slice of the web, I've started to think 'why the hell not?!'

So, because you've been so supportive of me over the years already, I'd love to know what kinds of posts you'd like to see more of from me and I'll get to work on making them happen if I can.

Animal Magic

Every single item of clothing in magazines at the moment seems to have some sort of animal print or motif adorning them. Am I the only person excited by this? I can't be, can I?
However, am I likely to spend £500 on a pair of shoes with a cat face on them? The answer is no, nope, no way mate face. I'm far more likely to get picked for synchronised swimming or that ribbon twirling thing at the Olympics. Yeah.

Being thrifty isn't about sitting in a dark room, lit only by ear wax candles. If you want to stay on trend and can afford to spend a little it makes sense to search out a cheap alternative rather than bankrupting yourself for the 'must have' items.

Mr Thrifty bought me this amazing mint coloured swan print top from Dorothy Perkins (by the way use code DPVIPE for 25% off everything in Dorothy Perkins until 20th) after I'd seen what felt like a billion swan print tops in magazines which I couldn't find or afford. I'm officially in luff with it plus I certainly like him at lot more. Is it wrong that I'm excited because someone, somewhere has drawn a picture of an animal - a living thing - and someone else has put it on a item of clothing? I'm walking around with a teeny, tiny creature on my boobs. S'magic, like glitter or carpet. We have no need for these things but oh how we likey them. Hmmm ramble.

I really want to rock the animal (or wardrobe zoo as Alex from Odd Socks and Pretty Frocks would call it) look this summer without spending big. Here are some of the things I'm thinking of buying whilst on a tight budget (of course I turn to eBay, I'm OBSESSED).

- Speaking of cat shoes I LOVE the Charlotte Olympia kitty flats but coming in at £485, an alternative is the only option. I found these bargain cat shoes on good old bay of e, what say ye?

- I can't really manage to bring an outfit together without the aid of a cardigan. Am I the only one like that? Cardigan arsenal. I'm seriously thinking about adding this flamingo print cardigan to my knitwear weaponry.

- My cat obsessed cousin is getting one of these cat print t-shirts from me when she doubtlessly passes her GCSEs with flying colours. Go Robyn - can we all wish her luck please?

- It'd be overkill to wear swan print jeans with a swan print top, non? Say no, say it would be fine, make me smile my wonky, chipped tooth smile.

- Look at this deer print top, seriously LOOK AT IT - but maybe with the aid of a mirror. Looking directly at it may be too much. NEED.

- A bunny print scarf? This isn't straying into the lady-walking-down-the-street-mumbling-about-milk-cartons category, is it?

How to make your own lemon lip scrub

What I'm about to tell you is going to make me so irresistible to you, you're going to want to smash through your computer screen just to kiss me. Maybe.

Folks, I have flaky lips and it is horrible. This isn't just a winter thing it is an all year round sexy treat for my face. Nice huh? I've tried scrubbing them with an old toothbrush but my lips must be super fine because even the most gentle of touch with the toothbrush makes them bleed. I struggle getting lipstick to glide on because of it and it damn well looks a dry old 'orrible mess. I want to wear bright lipstick colours and not look like my lips have a disease, damn it.

So I looked into it and it turns out I'm not alone, lots of people have revolting lips too. Hurrah! Let's form a union. Cosmetics companies are putting out lip scrubs and another such gubbins so we too can have super smooth lips, how nice of them. Only I'm not really prepared to pay lots of money for these products. So I made my own. Here's how I did it -

How to make your own lemon lip scrub

What you will need:
Juice of 1/2 a lemon
100g soft brown sugar
Runny honey
Olive oil
A bowl
Wooden spoon

Method:
1. Put the half soft brown sugar into a bowl slowly add enough honey to mix into a firm paste - almost so it comes together in chunks.
2. Then pour in olive oil bit by bit until reaches a thin but not runny consistency.
3. Add the lemon juice and mix in very well.
4. Finish by adding the remainder of brown sugar and stirring until the paste is almost hummus like in consistency. Add more honey or oil if you feel the mixture needs it, just make sure it isn't sloppy.

You can then pack the scrub into a small leftover pot or tin and pop in the fridge to keep it fresh.

The brown sugar is just rough enough to rub off the dry skin without damaging your lips, the lemon prevents infections and the oil and honey soften your lips into kissable submission. Mwah!

I need your help

My cousin has had a terribly hard time of it recently - health problems and relationship woes. So I'm planning on spoiling her when her birthday comes round at the end of the month. The thing is, I'm on a budget so I need some ideas and an injection of creativity.

Here's what I have planned so far -

Pamper Day / Movie Night

I've arranged for her brother to drive her up here from way daaan sarf. I'll take her out straight away to have her nails done and a have a professional rub her shoulders in some sort of rhythmic fashion (I know some folk who owe me a favour so that's a freebie). Then we'll head back to Thrifty Towers for cake and movie night. She is a movie obsessive and film really means something to her so I'd like to give the evening a movie theme in some way....SEE I need your help.

Now here is where I fall down folks. I have the DVDs (Casablanca, The Red Shoes and which ever rubbish 1980s chick flick she fancies) but I want to make it really special without a spending a bomb.

I want to give everything a movie themed twist.
- What kind of movie themed cake can I make without wanting to kill myself - I hate doing anything more than putting butter icing on a cake...it's too arty for me.
- What movie themed gift can I give her?
- How can I decorate the room in a movie theme?

Any hints, tips, ideas - on a budget? Please, please, please (worried wobble to voice) leave your comments and links below so I can really pull it out of the bag for one of the most important people in my life.

The Rise of The Thrifty Blogger

On Saturday I'm going to get up at the crack of dawn and catch the train to the big smoke of That Lundun because I'm going to speak at a blogging conference called Cybher. The conference run by Sian of Mummy Tips is a celebration of women in blogging and I'm really excited both about speaking and listening to the other speakers but also to meet lots of blog friends many of whom I've interacted with online now for almost 5 years.

I'll be speaking at 13:55 in the Ballroom about the rise of thrifty blogging. The title of my session is -

The Rise of The Thrifty Blogger - How you can get involved before it's too late.

Yikes, does that sound grown up or what? Gulp.

I'm going to stand up in a room front of actual bloggers and communicate to them about blogging with my actual, human voice. BONKERS. Actual bonkers.

My talk is written, my slides are prepped and I'll be sharing them when I get back, if you like?

How to clean silver on a budget

I've been lucky enough to come across beautiful silver jewellery, cutlery and dishes in charity shops, bootsales and flea markets. Some of it is very badly tarnished and in need of some help. Worry ye not, you don't need to spend a lot of cash to fix the problem.

Here's a little tip I shared on Channel 4's Superscrimpers at the start of the year. This one, as you may have guessed from the title of the post, is for removing silver tarnishing.

How to clean silver

You can use this on silver jewellery etc. but I'm showing it on a silver spoon because the surface area is greater and you can get a better idea of the difference this method can make because the camera can pick up the detail better.

What you will need:
- Old toothbrush
- Cheap white toothpaste
- Water
- Cloth or rag

Method:
1. Wet the tarnished area lightly.
2. Put some toothpaste on to the tarnished area.
3. Rub the toothpaste in with an old toothbrush being careful not to scratch the surface.
4. Wet again to remove dirt and toothpaste.
5. Dry thoroughly.

And there you go, clean, shiny and frankly a darn sight more silver-y silver.

I've Made a Woodland Animal Birthday Hamper For my Friend

One of my lovely friends has a special birthday coming up *cough* 30 *cough* and because I love her dearly and want to put together something special I'm making her a hamper. A woodland animal hamper. Yes, she might be about to turn the big 3-0 but maaan does she lovely bunnies, deer, foxes and all that gang.
I've been collecting these items over the past year. I keep all of the hampers I'm working on in individual boxes and use an excel spreadsheet system which I explained here to keep on top of the budget.

I can't afford to spent a huge chunk of money in one go on a gift, even for a special birthday. So I save small bits and bobs throughout the year, thoughtful things which I know the recipent will love. Sure some of things only cost a pound however when they're collected together into a themed package it looks really, really special. One of my friends is planning on giving everyone a £150 watch for their 30th birthday - I doubt she can really afford that. It makes me sad.

- Teeny, tiny deer - charity shop.
I actually have a set of these myself which my friend has admired many a time so when I saw this little guy in the charity shop a few weeks back I had to stash it away for her.

- Bunny rabbit iPhone case (including fluffy tail)
I'm pretty sure the people who made these must have had my friend in mind when they were a-makin'.

- Owl socks - These are from American eBay so the prices go up and down depending on exchange rates.
Me no likey owls (I've never seen anything scarier in my life) but she does - ergo I'm a great friend. Ahem.

- Bambi tissues
Just cos, awww LOOK HOW CUTE.

- Pewter Hare Brooch
This is frankly gorgeous. I'm seeing this worn on a Autumnal morning with a black velvet jacket, I don't know why.

- Bunny Ribbon
My friend is a hardcore crafter and has half a room stuffed with ribbon and yet NO BUNNY RIBBON. S'up with that? I've corrected it for her.

- Stag Necklace
I *may* have got one for myself too. Oops.

And those lovely cheap bits and bobs are to be wrapped up in pink and blue tissue paper and tucked snuggly into one of these frickin' amazing fox bags (I've linked to the cheapest ones I could find) from ebay. My lovely friend Louise did a review of these on her youtube channel.

Is Shopping For a Bargain Uncharitable?

Over the weekend I made and published a charity shop rant video in which I expressed my displeasure at charity shops charging large amounts of money for Primark and supermarket clothing. When I tweeted about my video a ~~debate~~ argument followed in which it was argued that charities should be able to charge what they want because it is for charity and my wanting a bargain is uncharitable. Hmmmm. This displeased me. Greatly. But let's move on from that particular exchange.

I used to shop in charity shops multiple times a week, sometimes even daily.
I liked that -
1. I could save money.
2. Buy second hand and not clog up the planet with excess items.
3. Support a charity whilst doing the first 2.

However over the last year or so I've stepped back a little because the prices have increased at a rate incomparable to the high street. Many people I talk to via this blog or Twitter are stepping away from charity shops because they've changed so much lately. Yes, the charities deserve to make money for their cause that is afterall what they are there for, however traditionally they are a source of well priced clothes for people in need/who want to pay less. These people kept the charties afloat for many a year so they're a tad mystified that things have changed almost over night.

To find, as I have many times, clothes that I've seen in Primark for around £8 marked up at £15+ in charity shops makes my teeth grind and scrape together, which isn't good because I already have appauling teeth. Some people might say that the shop is there as funding for charity and they don't mind paying that ~~little bit~~ large chunk extra because it goes to the charity but many more of us find ourselves walking away from the charity shop knowing we can buy the same item new - without the make up and arm pit stains - elsewhere.

Those of us who shop in the charity shops on a regular basis and buy a large majority of our clothes, furniture and homeware in them, the bread and butter customers, are annoyed but even more so are those people who could be tipped over into being regular charity shop shoppers but now won't be. Over the weekend a lot of people told me that they've been into charity shops to buy something fancy dress for hallowe'en or Christmas and thought it might, after reading my blog, tip them over into charity shop lovers. However many vowed never to return because plain (SECOND HAND) H&M t-shirts were priced at £10 or George at Asda dresses, as lovely as they are were £16. Potential customers, willing to love charity shops, willing to put money in the hands of these charities have been driven away. Keeping people coming back on a regular basis is surely key to raising the most amount of money? Leaving shoppers feeling ripped off - and yes I think you can feel ripped off in a charity shop without being uncharitable - will not see shoppers return time and again - to be charitable.

If someone is kind enough to donate a Chanel hand bag of course they should sell it for an appropriate price, of course. I believe some of the larger charity shops even train their staff to spot antiques and designer labels. Maybe they should teach them that Florence and Fred, Tu and Atmosphere labelled clothes are from Tesco, Sainsbury's and Primark respectively and should be labelled and priced accordingly not as 'vintage' whatever that means nowadays.

Many charity shops are trying to brand themselves as part of the regular high street fashion retail pack, so can they really justify charging £17 for a second hand dress when the same dress is retailing at £12 brand new three stores down? A proper high street shop knows their market, knows their customer - if a charity shop wants to be seen in the same light the first thing they have to do is get to know their customer. We're not out to swindle a charity but we're not out to be swindled by a charity. We're trying to buy second hand items at a price which suits a charity and doesn't in the process alienate us. Forever.

Another side that I've heard a lot of people mention is that they'd usually give their clothes to a charity shop when they've finished with them but because they've seen their donations over priced in store they've started selling them at bootsales or just plain old slinging them into landfil.

Ulitmately, I want charities to make as much money as they can from their charity shops and I understand they have overheads. However I don't believe they can keep their current customers and attract newer customers into their shops if people know they can get an item newer elsewhere. Not everyone is eco savvy and not everyone can afford to keep charity in the forefront of their mind. People on a lower income need to buy clothes, lots would like to buy from a charity shop and support a charity in doing so but if they can buy more or less the same item cheaper elsewhere then they'll go elsewhere.

As you can probably tell I could rant on and on about this all day but I shall leave it here for now and request your input with the questions below.

Is expecting a bargain in a charity shop uncharitable? Should charities be able to charge what they like in the name of charity? I'd love to hear your throughts.

Current make up favourites Under £5 - Spring 2012

Make up, maaake up, maaaaaaaaaaaake up! I'm a tad obsessed by the stuff. Not beauty blogger (bow down to them) obsessed but y'know normal-attitude-to-make-up-ish obsessed. You'll often find me in Superdrug or Boots rubbing lipsticks and eyeliners on my hand.

I love expensive make up but I really only have it if I'm lucky enough to receive it for my birthday or Christmas. So I'm often to be found in a chemist swatching products from the more affordable make up lines in the quest for a bargain which really works.

Make Up Under £5

I've made a quick review video which I've embedded below or you can hop over to Thrifty Telly on YouTube if that is easier for you, however I've given a short review of each of my current favourites below.

Collection 2000 - Skyscraper Mascara in Ultra Black £4.99
Jebus, I love this stuff. The brush has long bristles at one end and short at the bottom meaning you can really get in to the lower lashes and add to the top and outside lashes with real precision. It lengthens straight away but the precision brush really allows you to build up volume without looking clumpy. I've found the formula to be wet but not sloppy and it didn't feel drying throughout the day which is really important to me because my eyelashes tend to feel brittle by the end of the day and droop which leaves smudges under my eyes.

Elf - Eyelid Primer in Sheer £1.50
Do you have oily eyelids like me? Doesn't it make you feel beautiful and sexual huh? Mmmm greasy lids. Anyway, ~~eye~~ I find my eye shadows lasts around 0.3 seconds before sliding off and creasing without some kind of base layer or primer. I gave this a go because of the price and I'm incredibly impressed. It comes out of the tube looking a tad weird but blends and dries with a velvety fashion and some how, through £1.50 magic manages to keep my eyeshadow on all day. Pleasing.

NYC - Eyeshadow in I Love NY 917 £1.79
A great white/silver colour which is great added into the corner of my eyes to really open them up for a fresh, wide awake look. I've actually included this in my affordable make up giveaway.

Maybelline - Colour Tattoo 24 HR in Eternal Silver £4.99
I have these colour tattoos in 3 or 4 colours and I'm tempted to go out and buy them all and I'm really not that kind of person. They don't budge, the blend well, the look great packed on as a solid colour and also as a top shimmery colour. I can't get enough and use one every day.

Elf - Complexion Perfection £3.50
If you watch the video you'll see that I originally hated this product but now I love it. I have extreme redness on my face, always have and always will so I'm on a constant quest to find the perfect product to tame it some how. This isn't perfect but it certainly dulls it to an extent that my face doesn't look like a strawberry within half an hour of applying a face full of foundation.

I'm always surprised when I write about discount codes and vouchers that so many people have never used or even heard of them. Use them, they're good! It'll be a cold day in hell when I buy something without first searching for a discount code to knock some money off the price.

Lots of people in the past have been embarrassed about even admitting they use these, but it turns out more and more of us are happy to admit we like to save money and use discount codes and vouchers. ~~Obviously I'm really shy about these types of things so I don't ever scream it from the roof tops, oh no.~~

I'm happy to tell everyone I've ever met that I buy my clothes in charity shops, barter at markets and use coupons, codes and vouchers, so it breaks my head to hear that people aren't in the same mind set. I understand that it is probably very gauche to talk about money but when I'm making the savings I am, I want other people to get in on the action and save money too. I'll admit that is partly selfish. I want more people to use them so more companies sit up and notice the demand for them and in return dish out some more lovely money saving vouchers.

The rather pretty infographic from Savoo, below is really interesting to me. In my tiny little brain I thought everyone across the board would love discount codes once they'd been educated in their ways but there is a real geographical difference, with those savy folk north of the border are doing really well when it comes to discount voucher savings.

Where abouts do you live in the UK? How much do you think discount vouchers and codes save you every week? I'm a nosy parker so I'd love to know. My voucher use varies week on week because some weeks I simply buy nothing, others I need to spend more. My best saving has been £500 in one week but that was a week in which we booked hotel rooms and bought wedding gifts on top of our regular out goings.

In 2008 I joined a Flickr group, in doing so I set myself the challenge of taking a photograph every single day. That is harder than it sounds matey, much harder. But through some form of magic I managed to take and upload 366 photographs in just one year and loved the challenge.
