One of the newest places we like to stop off for a stroll is Sale Water Park. Similar to nearby Chorlton Water Park, Sale Water Park is very close to the M60 motorway and the lake, once a gravel pit (which was excavated during the formation of the road), stands on the land of an old hall farm. The pit was flooded in the 1970s and as such provided the artificial lake included in the 152 acre park.
The park is a great break from the city (although you can still hear the hum and swish of the motorway in the majority of the park) and we've found it a lovely spot to walk the dog. Part of the park is made up by Broad Ees Dole, a nature reserve formed of mud flats and wetlands which attract wading birds and wide and varied wildlife which always means theatrics when Mr Thrifty realises he has forgotten his binoculars. There are woods and fields and meadows to explore along with a good hearty stroll alongside the lake. Jarvis loves getting lost in the long grass and slinking under gates and over fences (that dog can sure jump), along with greeting every.single.dog. who passes within a 4 mile radius.
The River Mersey fences the park and is lush and vibrant, with beautiful, beautiful views. I adore walking along this river. Peace and quite washes over you instantly and you're transported to another world. I could quite happily walk along side this river everyday.
We come here to walk the dog on the way back from car journeys as it is close to the motorway and gives us a chance to stretch our legs along side the lake, river and through woods and fields after hurtling along the M60 next to maniacs. We're so lucky to have such a fab place nearby.
Parking at the visitor centre is free and there is a good sized cafe on site which sells really delicious meals plus snacks and drinks and Jackson's Boat, a historic pub (which is dog friendly!) can be found on the banks of the Mersey. There is a restaurant next to the water sports centre but I have yet to visit, so if you've been let us know what you think below. You can easily have a good few hours here exploring and you could even combine a walk around this park with a walk around Cholton Water Park simply by following the river.
