How to organise and clean a fridge

How to organise a fridge

I'm a firm believer in meal planning as a great basis for a thrifty lifestyle and having a clean, organised fridge keeps things ticking over just that bit easier.

Our fridge is a small under the counter jobbie which came with the flat. It's small and requires crouching down/sitting on the floor to get a good look inside. I want it to be organised, not glossy-ooh-pin-this-quickly-it-is-so-pretty organised but useful and easy to use.

My tips are below but I've also made a quick video chattering away about what is in my fridge and how we do things a Thrifty Towers. If you can't view the embedded version you can click over to my YouTube channel to watch it there. Subscribe to my channel (it's free) to be updated when I publish a new video.

Cleaning a fridge

- Wipe spills and splashes as and when they happen.

- Give the inside of the fridge a wipe down with a mixture of white vinegar and bicarbonate of soda once a week.

- Take all of the shelves and drawers out once a week or once a fortnight and wash with hot water and washing up liquid. Do the same with the grooves and fittings. Clean the door seal with a paste of bicarbonate of soda and water using an old toothbrush.

- Place an open small pot of bicarbonate of soda in the back of the fridge to keep it smelling fresh. Stir weekly and replace monthly.

- We have a few flexible chopping boards from Ikea (these ones) which we use to line the fridge shelves if we are placing in very 'drippy' items. They are easy to remove and wash.

Organising a fridge

- Keep like with like. Our cheese is all kept together, sandwich meats in the same area and fresh meat is kept together for ease of use and also so it is unable to drip onto other items.

- Make it easy to grab at things. We use baskets and trays to we can pull things out.

- Make sure not over stuff your fridge as it can become inefficient.

- Know what not to store in a fridge (see below).

- Keep open items in sealed containers.

- If you're decanting items make sure they are well labeled - I often use these stickers with a cheap but always useful chalkboard pen.

What we don't store in our fridge

- Bread. We don't live in a warm environment it isn't needed.

- Fruit and vegetables. (with the exception of a few things like berries, leaves, peppers and chopped or peeled items). It doesn't go off easily and it takes up valuable space, we keep our fruit in a bowl in our dining area and our veg in cool (but not cold) dark place.

- Good cheese. We'll happily keep cheese for sandwiches in the fridge but we keep really lovely cheeses on a cheese dish in our dining area because refrigerating certain cheeses can actually spoil their flavour. We tend to eat it for a main meal so it is eaten quickly.

- Eggs. Eggs take on other smells and fridges are full of smells. Mmm onion-y cake anyone? Plus the quality degenerates very quickly. We buy in small amounts, store in a cool and dark place and use quickly.

- Preserves/jams/ketchups/mustards etc. I know this causes a lot of debate but we're of the 'keep it in the cupboard' camp here at Thrifty Towers - well, mostly. Cold HP Sauce? Oh hell no. Salad dressings and fresh sauces dressings which go off quickly are of course kept in the fridge.

- Butter. Butter stays in a butter dish on the table apart from in very, very hot weather. Butter alternatives stay in the fridge.

Are you in the ketchup in fridge gang or not?

P.S. Remember freezers work better when full up and fridges are the opposite.

  1. Ketchup in the fridge is weird! When I'm eating hot food, I don't want cold ketchup all over it!

  2. Ketchup ALWAYS in the fridge xo

  3. I do keep condiments in the fridge, I kinda like them cold. My fridge is about 50% full of condiments though. Love them.

  4. I would love an organised fridge, perhaps I should just try harder, thanks for the advice. Our ketchup is in the fridge, cold ketchup is excellent at cooling down hot food for hungry children

  5. I like cold condiments AND cold fruit! Can't bare it warm. The Beard is the opposite - so we have a fruit bowl too :)

  6. Ketchup is meant to go in the fridge, it says so on the bottle! Stormed out of bed at about 1am once to prove this to the boyfriend, who refused to accept it!

  9. Ketchup IN the fridge! It's what it tells you to do on the bottle!!

Bread OUT the fridge though, but my parents disagree. Which is annoying.

  10. Husband doesn't fridge ketchup, I do. Endless debates.

We have an 'egg chicken' which keeps eggs as well as the fridge: never had an 'off' one from the chicken, even up to the use by date.

LOVE the ikea tray idea... we have the most annoying grooves to clean so I hate drips in my fridge.

  11. Useful stuff this! We keep our ketchup in the fridge - no idea why. And if I keep jams or marmalades out, they go off. Any top tips for a wet fridge? It all drains to under the "salad drawer" and there's a daily puddle there. It's a rented flat, otherwise I'd splash out on an energy efficient triple A fridge.

  12. Wonderful post! Love it. Especially the idea with the tray is great - I'll adopt this idea for my fridge as well! Thank you! :-)

I keep eggs in the fridge though because we often eat them in the last minute and then it's better to know that they have been cooled all the time.

I belong to the ketchup in the fridge gang. ;-)

  17. Bread and eggs not in the fridge, as well as some fruits and veges, although I do put a lot of them in the fridge, but only the ones I think need it! I have limited cupboardspace as well as fridge space so Ketchup goes in the fridge!

  18. Always always always keep HP in the fridge (i won't have ketchup in the house - yuck)! I'm a bit of an over-obsessive when it comes to keeping things in the fridge though. Luckily, there's plenty of room so my fridge obsession doesn't cause major problems.

Eggs though, put them in a cupboard!

  19. I know that a lot of condiments don't neeeed to go in the fridge (or eggs) but I like them to be cold and I've found with jam it goes mouldy much quicker if it's out of the fridge. Hannah

  20. Ketchup and mayo in the fridge. Brown sauce in the cupboard and eggs in an egg rack on the countertop.
One thing that MUST be kept in the fridge = chocolate!

  21. Great tips as always and I admire you carrying on when lids fell off...I'm so clumsy I would probably tip half the contents of the fridge on the floor! Woop woop for a Thrifty Mrs Xx

  22. I found this post very useful! Thanks for sharing!

  23. It used to drive me insane when I was at Uni and my housemates would take up valuable fridge space with stuff that didn't need to be kept in there! Although I am in the "keep ketchup in the fridge" camp, I think it's because I just prefer it cold when I'm eating mega hot chips.

Eggs I always keep out of the fridge though. And bread I always split the loaf and keep half in the freezer, because I live alone and I never use a whole loaf up before it goes mouldy. That way I can just defrost a couple of slices whenever I need it.

  24. You keep the fridge amazingly clean. I need to apply these tips immediately to my fridge because it is a disaster. Well at least it ain't stinky but it is super messy. And I have a bad habit of buying new food even thought the old one is still stocked up. Aww. Except eggs, I put everything else in the fridge. It is just the habit cuz I don't know which one is ok not to put in the fridge.

  25. I keep sauces, jams, and mayo in the fridge. Eggs I keep in a tin soap dish on the worktop, not only 'cos it's better for them but it looks pretty!

I do all as you do pretty much, inc. the keeping stuff in trays thing. I do keep my bread in the fridge. It's not something I really want to do, but, our 'daily bread' (i.e the white sliced rubbish) was going mouldy so often that I just thought I'm not leaving it out anymore. So in it goes. Never had mould on it since, and as it's mainly for toast in the mornings, I don't care if it's cold to start off with.
Also in my fridge is husbands packed lunch for the following day, and the girls too, if she's not having hot dinner.

    Good tips, lady. x

  26. I'm definitely in the Condiments in the Fridge Camp! Can't stand warm ketchup or jam! Other than, I keep veggies (apart from potatoes and onions) in the fridge, but never bread. I'm also guilty of over-stuffing my fridge and having to throw things out that I've forgotten about - what a waste of money!
