My mother makes the best Christmas lunch - FACT AND LAW
My grandmother makes the most delicious Christmas cake - FACT AND LAW
The Snowman must only be watched on Christmas Eve, not before nor after - FACT AND LAW
We all have these small little things which are Christmas law in our homes or family, special ways things are done. The above statements are neither fact nor law but in our family they might as well be. We all know someone who makes 'the best Christmas lunch' or someone who knows the trick in making the perfect Christmas cake or someone who can play every carol on the piano.
As I've grown older and moved away geographically from family those traditions and personal Christmas facts and laws have become somewhat dilute and it makes me a wee bit sad. I love the Christmases we celebrate now, I love the small traditions we're forming as a couple and with my new side of the family, so I've decided not to allow these traditions and the traditions of others in my family to fade too much.
I have my mother in law's Christmas pudding recipe (passed down through the women of her family), my mother's stuffing recipe, Mr Thrifty's 93 year old grandfather's perfect pastry recipe and lots of other meaningful Christmas traditions all jotted down. I'm going to get fancy with colourful pens and crafting bits and bobs and enter them into my Christmas Survival Guide* from GettingPersonal so they can survive long past the formation of new traditions but into the legend territory of Christmas FACT AND LAW.
I want these traditions to enter family legend, I want them to be passed down the generations and shared out as another generation splits and becomes another family within ours. I'd love my great, great grandchildren to look back long after I've gone and see what Christmas and family meant to me and maybe have them act out one of our now old fashioned traditions or try our no doubt weird recipes.
P.S. Which Christmas traditions are really important to you? Does your mother make the best roast potatoes? Do you always have a specific dish you'd like to keep as family legend for years to come.
