Lots of people struggle during the summer months. Children
are off school, there are more weddings to attend and the prices for holidays
jump through the roof. Here are some quick ways to create some cash this summer
without having to take on a part-time
job (where you’d find one, I don’t know) or consider any thing too dodgy!
eBay
As you know I’m an eBay obsessive but not only do I buy
things from eBay I sell things too. Take one day to declutter room by room then
photograph anything that is in good enough condition to sell. Then plonk
yourself down in front of the computer and write out some really good and
informative descriptions. Most of the items which go unsold on auction sites
are perfectly fine but no one will consider the seller as serious if the
description isn’t useful and informative.
Car share
Why not research car share schemes? If you’ve got to get to
work you can halve the price of petrol by having someone ride along with you.
Ask if your work place have any information but also check out sites such as
liftshare.co.uk and national carshare.
Sell gold
Yep gold is big business. If you have an ugly ring from an
ex or a necklace which just doesn’t suit you why not consider researching ways
to sell gold. Let’s face it, I’d rather pay for a really good day
out to a theme park than have an ugly ring sitting in my jewellery box doing
nothing other than collect dust.
Go veggie
So many of us have meat with every main meal but is it
really necessary? We here at Thrifty Towers aim to have meat only 3 nights a week and the rest of the time eat a vegetarian menu. We feel better for it and
have noticed our grocery bills have dropped significantly.
Do you have any ideas for saving money quickly?

great ideas!

Meat can be very expensive and but I love it too much to go veggy full time but I can see how having a meat free main meal 4 days a week could make a difference to the pennies. May have to give this a go

We have decided to de-clutter our spare bedroom (which is pretty much a junk room) & hold a car boot sale, it's £12 to set up a stall at our local car boot but with the amount we have to sell we will make a good profit plus car boot sales are fun! I like the idea of only eating meat 3 times a week, I would find this easy to do but it is persuading my other half to follow suit, we spend far too much money on meat for the month.
ReplyDeleteAm definitely going to get selling some bits on Ebay, I only work during term time so summer is always tricky! I'm veggie full time and it really helps towards saving some money, but the mister drives up the bills with his meat eating ways!

I'd love to go veggie, but I wouldnt know where to start with it all!

We eat very little meat in my house too, and when do it's things we can get hold of cheap in large amounts to cook things like chicken soups/stews or corned beef hash to portion out and freeze - every little helps ;-)
ReplyDeleteHandy ideas! Ebay is a great shout - at the end of every term at uni I get rid of what amounts ot around £100 (or more) of clothes on ebay. That means I can fill my car up (if only a couple of times...) and refresh my wardrobe a bit. I also don't buy a lot of meat as I find it really expensive. When I do I make great big batches of stuff like spag bol in a slow cooker and freeze about 5 portions, which costs me less as I can buy meat in bulk / make it go longer by adding more tomato to the sauce :) xx
ReplyDeleteI'm currently de-cluttering my bedroom and then i shall be selling my unwanted things on ebay, my only problem is nobody has brought anything i sell on there before and i think my descriptions are ok lol.

Love this post, great ideas from yourself as always. I'm trying not to spend anything today, it's working so far and a LOT of housework has been done as a result. P.s- I watched some of your YouTube videos the other day and they're great. I also noticed you have a cool voice (not meant in a creepy way!!), mine sounds like I've swallowed the answering machine when I hear it.
ReplyDeleteRamble over!

Ah thanks re the voice!
DeleteI am always looking for ways to cut down my grocery bill. We have vastly cut down the amount of meat we eat and it's helped loads. We have also started eating cheaper cuts of meat when we do eat it, and its definitely made me more creative with my cooking.

Very timely - I've recently become more than a tad obsessed with adopting a more frugal lifestyle and becoming more organised (which is how first stumbled upon your blog ;))so I began with a massive clearout on ebay last night and have been browsing the net for further suggestions.

I very rarely eat meat or fish, only as a special "treat" i guess, as it's quite expensive.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a handy post!
ReplyDeleteI deffo will try some of these things as I have already spent most of my paycheck and it's only he start of the month! oops

I cut back on meat last Spring, for health reasons. I don't want to go veggie full time because i like meat, and also, I like not having pressure. But I noticed that it's easier than I thought! And it also helps that it's cheaper!
ReplyDeleteI was just about to post some money saving tips on my blog-love your tips though! We only buy meat once a wk and make many meals from it. Beef is going to be very expensive-more than now so yeah finding other food options is very imp! xox

When the weather is good I aim to reduce driving and public transport by walking and cycling for all local journeys. It's saved me about £20 a week in petrol and bus/tube fares!
ReplyDeleteSome great tips. I try to eBay as much as I can but I've had a few dodgy buyers recently. I keep meaning to check what gold we can get rid of so thanks for the prompt on that one too.
ReplyDeleteX x
I walk everywhere, public transport is just too expensive.

I went veggie as a student because it helped me keep my food spending down. My friends all thought I was mad but it really is a great tip that no one really thinks of. Cx
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I are saving to move so we have allowed ourselves £200 each a month pocket money, so that is for clothes, make up, going out, alcohol, taking my son out etc! It soon makes you stop and think about what you are spending on! I also plan my meals week by week so I can use a lot of the same meats and veggies so that I don't end up not using it all! Both tips have really helped us to save money! x
ReplyDeleteeBay is working a treat for me recently. I spent £28 on a new dress and some boots from the eBay outlet and then had a sudden panic thinking 'oh nooooo, that's so much money, what to do' and promptly stuck a load of old clothes up for auction and spookily made back almost exactly what I'd spent :D
ReplyDeleteOooh fab!
DeleteI have just recently sold some tacky gold items to raise money for a new car, a few rings (two without stones) and a necklace netted us over £200. Some tips for people; the best on-line place is hatton garden metals (an undercover review was done by money saving expert and they came out as the only one they would recommend) they offer a good price but you have to pay postage with insurance. In our case, I slogged round the city centre comparing prices and found that I could get a decent price there without the hassle of worrying about posting it all. This only meant we lost out by about £10. It seemed that the places offering the best prices were those tacky money shops and cash converter places, the upmarket jewellers weren't offering anything near them. Also I found that you can get a slightly better price by pawning them and just leaving them there. Hope this helps!
ReplyDeleteFab tip! I shall keep it in mind.
DeleteNot going shopping!! Relax during the summer:)
ReplyDeleteBeen selling so much on ebay since I got back from uni, just wish that postage wasn't quite as expensive right now.

I'm in mega saving money attempts right now. Instead of buying a weekly or monthly Oyster card and getting buses and the tube everywhere I've been using the pay-as-you go system, using only buses and walking WAY more. Walking instead of jumping on public transport has been saving me heaps of dosh. And it's helping to make me fitter too.
ReplyDeleteIm a student so the veggie suggestion will actually be really helpful!!

I hope it helps next term.
DeleteLoving the part time veggie idea. I think i'll actually have to do that when I go to uni in a couple of months! Keep the tips coming!

Great ideas, I try to be semi- veggie during the week too, and I'm having a huge declutter for eBay at the moment!

gonna try selling some stuff on eBay now, not sure if anyone would want it though!
ReplyDeleteI recently stumbled across your blog and I LOVE it! I love the layout to the content and everything in between! Your blog is simply the epitome of perfection! I am your newest, most avid follower, I look forward to reading your future posts. I would love it if you could perhaps follow me back too? Have a lovely day!

Eat out of the freezer!
ReplyDeleteI can't be the only who buys stuff for the freezer when it's on offer and then forgets I've done so. My freezer is always groaning, so when I'm short on cash, I ban myself from buying anything other than perishables, and live out of the freezer for a bit.
These are some really good ideas :) xxx
