£1.99 Mascara

09/07/2012

Okay I'm going to admit this now, I'm a mascara fiend. I go through it like the clappers, I have at least 15 in rotation and it's really the one place where I'll spend stupid amounts for liquid in a tube - stupid amounts. Just... just...just do not even get me started on my obsession with YSL Faux Cils and the fact that my birthday and Christmas are so close together I can't get a new one in the middle of the year as a gift unless I am very accommodating toward my husband.

NYC Showtime mascara

However as usual I like the lower end of the market too, some of them are just as good and some are frankly amazing (Collection 2000 Skyscraper I'm lookin' at you baybeh). My current favourite is something I picked up on a whim in Superdrug when they were running some kind of promotion or other. It is Showtime Volumizing Mascara by NYC and as my title suggests it comes in under £2.

NYC showtime review There are no whiz bangs with the brush, it is your standard wand however I've found the formula to be really, really long lasting. It lasts around 12-14 hours for me, before smudging and flaking which is amazing considering I have some really high end mascaras which can't achieve half that.
The packaging promises volume and yep, it does add volume and depth however I found I needed to comb through again just to get rid of the odd clump that a second coat can create (I'm a several billion coats kinda girl) but again I have to do that with several other mascaras I've tried regardless of price or brand.

The second this runs out or dries up I'll be running out to buy more because it works for me as a great everyday mascara and with brands seemingly obsessed with providing us with 'false lash effect' (and yeah I love those too) it can be hard to find a great day time mascara.

You can pick it up for £1.99 in Superdrug which frankly, is a total and utter bargain.

  1. I can't wear black mascara - being a ginger, I have to go for brown or it just doesn't look right on me. But I LOVE Boots Natural Collection Waterproof Brown mascara. In fact, having tried more expensive brown ones, it's the best I've come across. It goes on well, it's long lasting, looks great, and it's only £1.99 :)

  4. Looks ace. I got Supershock from Avon (on one of their offers, it came in at about £3), works really well. But this one from Superdrug sounds the same, cheaper and easier to 'pick up' rather than waiting for delivery!

  5. I'm a very fair skinned blue eyed mousey blonde so don't like black mascara and I am also a fan of Boots natural collection waterproof brown mascara as well! Though saying that I did pick up the new MUA Every Lash brown/black mascara yesterday costing £3 and tried it out for the first time today! It is slightly darker than I'm used to but not too much & I have to say I'm really impressed. The brush is soft rubber and it doesn't clump my lashes together at all even after a couple of coats. Clumpy mascara lashes is by far my my biggest mascara hate. This separates them really nicely, covers really smoothly and appears to lengthen them (although my eye lashes are fairly long anyway). I didn't use eyelash curlers but it also appears to have lifted them slightly as well. Very happy to find a mascara that not only lengthens & gives volume but most importantly separates all my lashes. Has a big thumbs up from me so far!

    1. I'm the opposite to you - I need to wear black/blue (!) mascara because my hair is blackish brown. If I wear brown mascara it makes my lashes look lighter, which is not the look I'm going for lol

  14. The reason a lot of mascaras are expensive is because of the money that goes into the brush development - so if you like an expensive mascara that has a standard brush, you can most likely find a much cheaper alternative for it!

  15. This is my favourite mascara! It started to run out so I bought a different brand as I really like to try them out, but it just wasn't as good. So I use the brush of this mascara in the other mascara, because I just think this brush is so good, the smaller ones definitely work best for me as I can get to all the little ones in the corners of my eyes. Said brush way too many times there :P

  16. As Perdita recommended above, Avon's Supershock is fab. The wand is, of course, the best bit of any mascara.

p.s. don't forget you need to get rid after 3 months! Mascara is the worst product for building bacteria :S

  19. Have you ever tried Elf mascara? It's a super cheap brand, but tends to be pretty good quality. I haven't tried the mascara (have tried their other products though and have been happy), but I've heard it's good. Let me know if you have! THanks for this recommendation, I will definitely try it out :D

  20. Max Factor's mascara has always been my firm favourite, but if NYC are just as good then I'll definitely change brands! Will try out this weekend, thanks! X
