Pound Shop Make Up

Recently, in the comments section of my blog posts, I’ve had loads of you telling me about the great make up buys to be had in Poundland, so I thought I’d better check it out. Thanks so much for the tip! My local Poundshop isn’t the best but they still had a fairly good selection.

pound shop make up

The items tend to come wrapped in a little plastic wallet so there’s no room for sticky fingers but also there are no testers – you just have to take your chances.

I spotted a lot of coloured Sally Hansen nail polishes which I think are quite hard to get over here because we tend only to have the nail treatments from that brand – or am I on crack saying that? The shelves were positively groaning under the weight of Revlon, Maybelline, Rimmel and Cover Girl. They even had my favourite Collection 2000 concealer but unfortunately they were all in odd shades like Clementine Fire Face*.

Here’s what I picked up in Poundland, funnily enough all for £1 per pack -

poundland make up

- Maybelline Salon Expert in Eternal Ivory (29)
This is a fairly sheer ivory colour which takes 3 coats to build up any kind of opacity, however one coat works really well with white tips for a simple french manicure. I’ve been wearing 3 coats of this on one finger as a feature nail with the others painted spring pastel-y colours.

- Rimmel Stir It Up in NO WAY! (800)
This looked like a powder eyeshadow in the plastic wallet however when I opened it up and swirled my finger through it I discovered it is in fact a cream eyeshadow. The specks of white and black on top seem rather pointless because after the first application they all but disappear. That said it stays on a long time and blends nicely with other colours for a smokey eye and didn’t crease at all.

- Revlon Nail Enamel in Sheer Innocence (013)
A very sheer milky pink which was just the type of shade I was after. A bit watery (but I find a lot of Revlon nail polishes lean to the watery end) but it builds into a nice colour which I’ve found nearly impossible to chip, even when I put together a chest of drawers yesterday.

The next two items came together in one packet, still at £1.

- Rimmel Glam Eyes mono eyeshadow in Royal Violet (400)
The packaging is a nightmare to open, a real nightmare. Once I got in I discovered the pigmentation to be weak however when I did try it on my eyes it stayed on for 4+ hours (with eyelid primer) and blended nicely with the other products I used.

- Rimmel Soft Kohl in Chianti (001)
The outer packaging of the pencil is brown so I got excited when I saw this in the duo pack because Rimmel kohl liners really work for me. However this was nothing like the basic brown on the outside of the pencil. It turned out to be more of a plumy shade but I went ahead and gave it a whirl. It stayed put like other Rimmel Kohls have done for me plus the colour actually plays up my blue eyes.

On my way home I also popped into Pound World and they had similar stock, again in the plastic wallets (actually exactly the same purple wallets as Poundland).

I picked up the following -

poundworld make up
A pack of 2 Rimmel Vinyl Jelly lip liners in Hot Spark (009) and Starlet (003)
An absolute total and utter nightmare under lipstick, they seemed to make even the most stay put of lipsticks slide across my face. On their own they are FANTASTIC, no drying, good, long lasting colour and really glossy but nothing like a traditional lipliner. I’d say they’re a bit like a lip gloss in pencil form.

- Maybelline Lash Stiletto Mascara in Brown
I love, love, love the very slightly conical shape of the brush and actually the mascara separates my lashes nicely and makes them look longer. I don’t really like the smell of this product though, it doesn’t smell ‘off’ so much as unnecessarily scented which I find really odd for something I’m putting near my eyes. I’ll probably use this a few times before rinsing the brush out and using it with other mascaras.

I think most of the make up is either discontinued, excess stock or even items which have only appeared in American shops like Ulta or Walgreens but I don’t have much problem with that. I’m pretty pleased with my finds, they’re none of them perfect but then again I have issues with some products I have which cost £15+ so I think that is pretty much the way with make up. I’ll definitely been checking out the make up selection in some more of the many pound shops near Thrifty Towers

Would you buy make up from Poundland? What bargains have you found in pound shops? Tell me, tell me.

P.S. * This may not be a real shade.

  1. this is such a good idea, I’ve never thought of looking in pound shops for makeup, thanks! nicola xxx

  2. I don’t think I would without knowing the name – I know it’s often much cheaper for buying name brand shampoo etc. (then again I squashed all my shampoo into one bottle as I seem to have about three on the go at once – gives me amazing soft hair but did think for a minute that I might explode the bathroom!!)

  3. oohh thats good to know! definately going to have to pop in have a look for these… iv recently started buying (too much) make up in similar little sealed plastic wallets from tkmaxx, same kind of hit or miss but tend to be quite high end stuff down to about £7, things like stila (i didnt get this one think it might of been a bit more than £7.. but had foundation concealer and something else in it… ), pixi (2 nail varnishes) and bourjois (2 eyeshadows and a lip gloss). i think there brilliant £7 for big names :)

  4. Clementine fire face – ha, ha! I don’t use any of those brands (only use animal friendly stuff), but what a brilliant idea to look in pound shops. I think you’re right in saying Sally Hansen nail polish is rare here.

  5. the pound shop near me sell the possibility shower gels/bubble baths which usually retail at around £7, they don’t have very many scents but they all smell great!

  6. I’ve seen some stuff in a few local pound shops recently and there have been so many Revlon polishes but only in that colour! I’m yet to pick something up but if I find more colours I’ll definitely be buying :-)

  7. in the pound shop near me they sell the possibility shower gels/ bubble baths which usually retail at around £7! they don’t have all the different scents but they switch them out and they all smell great! I think it’s an amazing bargain!

  8. Never thought of looking for branded make up in the pound shops. At £1 each if they are not brilliant it is not too much of a loss. If I was paying £10 for them then that is a different matter! Good finds.

  9. oh wow never thought pound shops would carry this kind of stuff :) may have to go have a little look this avo :)

  10. What a great idea, I don’t tend to go to my local Poundland but now that I know what sort of things I can find I’ll be going more often!

  11. I bought a Clean&Clear product in Poundland but didn’t know there were makeup products.. :)

  12. I’d never have thought to head to Poundland for make-up :) I really like Maybelline but it’s extortionate!

Superdrug does a really good line of make-up that’s really cheaply priced too and works really well. It’s called New York Colour and most of the products are only about £2 :) They do mascara that really defines your lashes and it works so much better than most of the more expensive ones I’ve bought :)

    love, V <3

  13. When I read the title I thought it was going to be poundland cheapy rubbish but I’m glad I read on to find it was proper, decent brands. Thanks for the tip, I’ll check it out next time I go!! xx

  14. I can never find brands like Rimmel in my local Poundland :( only un branded stuff which is not of good quality!
I had the Maybelline Lash Stiletto Mascara a while ago and I agree, it smells awful so I stopped using it!
    great post :) xx

  15. I’m going to the land of pound asap! Thank you so much for blogging this! I literally had no idea poundland sold makeup other than toiletries!

  16. Oooo I’ll have to have a little look I think since buying make up is such an expensive habit! I normally only go into Poundland for craft supplies or sweeties so maybe I’ll be making it in there a bit more often. I just never understand why they need tills in Pounland and have to scan every item – surely they can just count it all up and do the simple maths! Even I could do that…maybe (: xx

  17. Do you know what? I have never look at war-paint in poundland. I am a fool.

And yes. You are on crack. Asda sells Sally Hansen – but I’ll wager that’s because of them being owned by Wallmart. The top/base cover stuff is the BEST EVER.

  18. I’ve bought from Poundland and also the 99p shop. I got a Sally Hansen blusher, lipgloss and nail varnish, crickey what can you say 3 things for 99p! Also recently Vaseline body lotion which is about £3 anywhere else. I prefer the 99p shop, nothing to do with being a penny cheaper ;) but I seem to pick up more there.

  19. i like the face they do sally hansen nail polish as i was only able to get it in Canada, plus Rimmel eyeshadows for £1 total bargain!! :)

get so much for a £5 i like shops like that!! :) x

  20. Wow I’m totally going to have a look in the poundland near me, I never thought of doing this before! xox

  21. This has defo made me want to check out my local poundland for make up thanks Mrs T x

  22. Have nabbed a few items in my time. Even unknown brands and they have worked well. Best buy pro colour hair dye. Fantastic.

  23. I haven’t bought make up from pound shops, only because I’ve never seen anything I’ve wanted. I do buy their nail art jewels though and they are excellent value for money.

  24. That’s great, I hadn’t considered pound shops having branded make-up, but I’ll definitely be having a look.

  25. Ive been really suprised and impressed by bargain make-up recently!

Cheap health and beauty shop Savers does St Moriz fake tan which I swear by and in Poundland I pick up camera film which seems so expensive anywhere else – always worth popping in!

  26. The lash stiletto for £1 is a bargain! and the Revlon nail varnish is one of my favourites. Great tips thrifty lady x

  27. So as an American (we’re all pushy lol) I feel free to let you know that Walgreens is a drugstore and usually have less expensive polishes whereas Ulta is a higher end cosmetics store and has more expensive polishes. That being said you found great things in your poundshops! Our equivalent (the dollar store) sometimes has good things, usually nail polish, but you hardly ever see great name brand makeup there :)

  28. I’ve bought quite a few Revlon nail polishes for a pound and some of them have been shades which have only come out the week before. Incredible. The best buy I ever had though was two gorgeous little Revlon mix and match compacts with a swirl of three gorgeous lip gloss/lip balm colours. I’ve never seen them anywhere else and I got two for a pound. I’m dreading them running out! xoxo

  29. I’ve bought quite a few bits from pound shops – it’s definitely hit and miss but my best buys were probably the Almay One Coat Dial Up Mascara and the NYC Chroma Face Glow in Moonstone.

  30. I started buying make up from poundland recently too.
I didn’t realise they had such good things occassionally! I totally take advantage of the Sally Hanson nail varnish too, I can’t get hold of them either over here!
I did buy a mascara in there too, and it smelt off aswell..I threw it away swiftly. But the majority of things are really great value :)

    Love, Elizabeth xx

  31. I love poundland for make up :)

I’ve picked up stuff from Rimmel, Revlon, Sally Hansen, Collection 2000 and NYC.
I kind of have to limit my trips there because I always end up buying loads!

Here’s a recent haul post from Poundland,

  32. I’ve had LOADS of bargains from pound shops, mainly Rimmel products. But I find that you have to do a bit of searching to find really good colours. But by far the best buys I’ve made are fake eyelashes. Some of them can be pretty thick and a little too fake looking, but every now and then there’s a pair that are absolutely perfect. All you have to remember is to have some proper glue, because the glue they come with is pants.
    Love your blog!

  33. I love makeup bargains. I don’t have a pound shop near me but there are some other shops that have makeup at bargain prices. I have nominated you for the Laine blogger award.

  34. I have never thought to buy makeup from Poundland. I don’t know why but it would always worry me that it was a knock off or something. I wouldn’t want any chemical nasties on my face. I guess I’m probably being paranoid.

  35. I really loved this idea! I’d always poo-pooed buying makeup from poundshops but I went in to a couple last week and found some bargains! Thanks for this great idea! Loving the blog as always!

  36. Hi! I have in the past i have posted about poundland: http://fashiionforeveer.blogspot.co.uk/2012/06/hello-so-new-blog-exciting-i-decided-to.html

If you could check it out it would be good:) Thanks! :) x

  37. I haven’t tried Poundland, but I have recently discovered the reduced sections in Boots and Superdrug! From Boots I picked up a Nip + Fab Tummy fix and Cellulite fix for £2 each because it was over stocked! And a Burts Bees lip balm for £1. In Superdrug I found nail polishes from Revlon and Accessorize for 50p. You can’t really complain!

    Lana, xo
