Organising your underwear

This is the Wednesday task from Daily Housewifery Prompts and you will not believe how many people have asked me for tips on this one.
Now, as with most of my tips, this isn’t going to change your life but it will certainly make it run just that wee bit smoother.

how to organise your underwear

Organising your underwear is all about figuring out how your use it and when. Okay, okay so you just put it on but really is it as simple as that?

My underwear has a few different categories and I like to use that as a basis for organisation. These categories, by the way, are usually very much in my head, I can’t believe I am committing this to history.

– Special/pretty
Underwear which I pop on when I want to feel really special or – smutty.

– Every day
Everyday knickers I can just pull on and know I’ll feel fine and comfortable all day

– Period pants
Oh come on, come on, come on we’ve all got them. They’re old, they’re grey and they’re not flattering but maaaan are they comfortable when needs be.

– Oh maaaan they do something special
Pants designed to either suck in, firm or hold tight. Not sexy but often very, very necessary.

– Special/pretty
As with the knicker section of the same name.

– Every day
Comfy, robust bras I can be safe in the knowledge will look after my boobies all day long but not really change my life.

– Oh man they do something special
Sometime I need them strapping down, sometimes I want to showcase them these are the underwired chaps for the occasion.

– Disaster bra
These bras hurt, the gouge and twist and stab and chafe and are just generally the David Cameron of the bra world (bastards) but for some reason most of us keep them in case they magically turn into a great everyday bra. Why do we do this, WHY?

Now, if these categories exist in my head then they need to exist in my drawers. If I want special knickers I want to put my hand into the drawer and pull them out as quickly as I’m going to pull them off.

This drawer is my main underwear drawer. The front section contains everyday knickers, the smaller middle one ‘period knickers’ and the back are ‘Special/pretty’. They’re pretty much lined up in order of need and use. In the same drawer, arranged around my pants I have all of my ‘every day’ bras.

I then have a separate larger drawer which contains and is organised into the following categories – bra and knicker sets (bra fastened through the leg of the knicker so they’re always kept together), sports bras, disaster bras plus knickers and bras which do something special like suck in or create eye-watering-ly extraordinary cleavage.

organising equipment

All of my underwear drawers are organised with Ikea drawer organisers (£4.99 in white) which I wholeheartedly love because they’re easy to change about and have a million different organisational possibilities. I have however in the past used cardboard boxes, cereal packets and Tupperware containers to keep everything neat and organised.

I know this is all very odd but as I often say, I like my days to run smoothly. Finding my underwear for the day is one of the first tasks I perform, so I don’t want it to be a jumble sale to rummage through first thing,  because mornings can be stressful enough as it is.

Is your underwear neatly organised or is it like rummaging through a bin bag every morning?

I was asked about this task via my ‘help me’ service (by Leo, Jude, Niall, Lorraine, Amber, Louise, Siobhan, Katy, Nikki, Kelly, Sally-Anne, Jen, Sarah, Aimee, Kir and someone anon) which you can read more about here. Basically if you are in need of any help when it comes to anything I blog about drop an email to and eventually, if I can help I will.

  1. This is perfect for me! I have 63 pairs of underwear, I wish I was joking. Not 63 pairs of bras+socks+underwear, no, 63 pairs of underwear alone. I’m sick, I genuinely believe I have a problem. I’ve never organised them, I just tend to shove them all in drawers and rummage for the ones I want that day. So this is perfect! x
    Sirens and Bells

  2. wait? no period bra? 😛 x

  3. i use ikea drawer organisers too. Pretty need when i use the organisers

  4. I’m using ikea drawer organisers too. Fit everything very nice.

  5. Ha ha ‘the jumblr sale rummage’ that is so me. I must confess sometimes I don’t pair my socks up when I put them away because I like being rebellious and wearing odd socks. It is one of those little things that drives my hubby nuts. Perhaps we should get out more :-)

  6. Great post! Drawer organisers-such a revelation-years of underwear drawer rummaging soon to be quelled :)

  7. Great post! Drawer organisers-such a revelation-years of underwear drawer rummaging soon to be quelled :)

  8. My knicker drawer looks exactly the same, right down to the little organisers. Sadly my bra drawer is a disaster. Must fix it…

  9. I too have those drawer organisers and as they were previously going unnoticed amidst a drawer FULL of my chap’s socks, I have recently moved them to under my bed and repurposed them for my underwears….I have a pj’s one, bras one, a nice everyday and fancy knickers one, a boring knickers one (holdy-in, period knickers, old knickers), and one for my WKD stockings (as a 1940’s enthusiast I wear stockings every day)! This system works a treat, and offers me pain free mornings!
I also use one for my nail varnish/nail files/nail varnish remover etc which is also under my side of the bed, as I tend to do my nails before I go to sleep and this makes it super easy! xx

  10. I was shamefully quite proud of myself when I saw ‘organise underwear drawer’ on this weeks list, safe in the knowledge that it is one of the few spaces that I have organised to a crazy degree!

  11. Haha I have the same categories for underwear sorting (in my head), however my knickers are in one big jumble sale tangle in a drawer and bras hang off a clothes hanger on my wardrobe drawer due to their mahoosiveness…

  12. I totally do this already! I even have the ikea thingys.

Recently I have been systematically culling the disaster bras. I’m approaching the big 3-0 and I have decided that I am of an age where I don’t need to put up with this crap anymore!!!

Does mean I have less underwear in the drawer which is a bit scary, but I suppose it gives me an excuse to buy some more nice friendlier ones :)

  13. I have exactly the same draw organisers and they are the best for turning my usually chaotic knicker drawer in to a panty paradise! Lx

  14. I am off to IKEA asap! That really would make my mornings easier! xx

  15. I have one drawer for bras – most of which need to be gotten rid of as 90% of them no longer fit me. That’s a task for the weekend. Then I have another drawer for knickers. I throw anything out when it starts to get tatty or grey and replace them as and when I need to.

  16. I use pillow cases (with smaller cushion cases/fabric bags inside) for my undies! They don’t even go in a drawer, they go at the bottom of my wardrobe. Like a santa’s sack of pants.

  17. Finally someone with the same level of underwear organisation as me. I fold my knickers into little squares and arrange them in little stacks in-between my lined up bras and rolled up tights. Socks live at the far side all rolled up in pairs.
I have to be so organised with them otherwise they wouldn’t all fit. I think underwear has the same “lipstick effect”. If I’m feeling glum I’ll buy something pretty but can fool myself they’re a necessity and don’t break the bank. Lovely!

  18. I love fancy/pretty underwear. Boux Avenue are great for that, they have a 50% off sale coming up too which I’ve already taken early advantage of 😉 I really need to dispose of all my disaster bras though, I don’t know why I still have them!

  19. And I thought it was just me – thank goodness it’s not!
My UW draw is freakily tidy. I now only buy/keep pretty stuff that is also comfy it has to be both to stay in the drawer and not in the bin.
My knickers are in one of those concertina drawer dividers – one pair in each divider – easy to see at a glance that I haven’t done any laundry for days – lol! And bras and socks are in pretty boxes – no lids which I got with pressies – so free!

And I organise hubbies UW pretty much the same!(no bras though, of course!!!)

  20. Helpful post. I thought I was organised for separating bras, socks and knickers! I shall now add categories to my drawers.

Also totally with you on the disaster bra thing. Why do we keep them?? Emergency use in case we forget to do the laundry? hmm not sure.

  21. This is such a good idea! I think that every girl should have one!

  22. I am bookmarking this post, my underwear draw looks like an explosion in a lingerie factory. I pulled out some weird looking flowery tight/leggings things today instead of pants. Could have been an underwear disaster. :)

  23. I’m glad i’m not the only one with period pants! I don’t really separate my undies into different kinds, but luckily my drawers have dividers in them so all my socks, bras and pants keep separate that way. That’s enough organization for me to uphold!

  24. I’d love for my underwear drawer to be that organised but unfortunately not, mine’s more of a jumble sale rummage!

  25. I SO need to do this – am planning to do it straight after tea this evening, in fact! (And I will be adding the stupidly frilly and don’t fit-never will to the charity shop box.)

  26. Brilliantly I use those Ikea things too, however my drawer STILL remains disorganised! I also have the blue polka dot underwear set! xxx

  27. Great post and I loved your comment about disaster bras it is so true!
    Sarah x

  28. This puts my “nice-ish everyday pants” at the front of the drawer, “pretty, smutty pants” in the middle-ish and everything else at the back or sides-method to shame :/ this weekend may be spent reorganising all of my drawers!

  29. This post made me laugh out loud, because I organise my underwear using the EXACT same categories in my head! Your idea about fastening matching sets together is genius *runs off to do same thing*

  30. I really need to throw out 90% of my underwear and start again because pretty much all I have are period pants! I want to be a proper grown up with a nice lingerie selection.

  31. I have a special set of thin ikea drawers so my under wear is separated neatly already, but I like this idea for ordering my running kit. I often scream at myself before a 6am run when I’m looking for certain running kit pieces and they’re all crammed into one massive drawer in no order at al!

  32. This is a great idea – my underwear drawer is such a mess! ‘Period pants’ and ‘disaster bra’ made me laugh a lot, it’s so true! x

  33. I’m definitely going to give this a go, especially for my tights, they have a mind of their own…

  34. What a great idea! My underwear drawer is a disaster, and I never thought of hooking the bra through the knickers to keep them together! Thankyou, you saint.

  35. haha ‘the David Cameron of the bra world (bastards)’ oh yes…had some disaster bras and no idea why they are still in my life?!

  36. Lol. Good idea. Mines a mess! xxx

  37. I think I need to get some organisers for my drawers …

  38. Brilliant! One of the few places that has escaped my ordered hand. I can never find the right pair and I’ll be hooking my best bras and pants together as soon as I get home!
