Would you wear £3.99 perfume?

28/05/2012

Recently I neared the end of my current perfume Coco Mademoiselle, boo hiss boo. Just as I was about to stump up a small fortune for a big bottle to see me through to Christmas, or investigate new perfumes, I received a text message from my friend which read

'Did you know Lidl do a perfume which smells a lot like your Chanel perfume?'

Say what now?

suddenly_perfume

I had a little google and it turns out lots of people, including Klee have found Lidl's Suddenly Madame Glamour, hilarious name aside, to be remarkably similar to Chanel's easy to wear scent Coco Mademoiselle. I had to check this out. I hotfooted it (technical term) down to my nearest Lidl in the hope of finding a bottle. I thought I'd need luck on my side because the ladies of blogland have found it hard to track down but the shelves of my local shop were full of the stuff, I need not have worried.

lidl_chanel_dupe The packaging is nothing to rave about, it's neither here nor there to be honest but seeing as I can't capture a scent in a photograph you'll have to make do with photos of the packaging.

Now to the scent. Just a quick sniff from the bottle and I thought it remarkably similar to the Chanel and sprayed into the air, again remarkably similar. The real test is on the skin. Could the Lidl match up to the Chanel?

I sprayed Suddenly Madame Glamour on my right arm and the very last of my Coco Mademoiselle on my left and allowed them to develop during the day.  I'm pretty sure this isn't a technical or scientific way of doing a scent test and I'm sorry no white jackets and goggles were worn to conduct the experiment. Ommmvvv.

suddenly_madame_glamour

They smelt very similar when first applied, sisters who are mistaken for twins a lot but when you take a good look at them there is a couple of years difference and one has a longer nose. That kind of similarity, y'know?
On my skin the oriental notes in the Chanel play louder than in the Lidl for the first 20 mintues or so. I can detect the citrus a lot more in the Lidl but I like that for summer. As the day wore on the difference became harder to detect and if I hadn't written down which arm was wearing which scent (yes my memory is shocking) I probably wouldn't have been able to tell the difference after 4 hours worth of wear on a warm day.

Would I compare the two?
Yes. I think they are very similar, especially once they've worn in during the day.
Would I buy either again?
Hmmmm I think I'd buy the Lidl before I buy the Chanel. Whilst I like Coco Mademoiselle I don't think of it in any way near as luxurious as other Chanel perfumes (I think that may just be the way the notes play out on my skin) and at £61 I'd rather buy something which excites me and drives me a bit batty than something I like but isn't me, me, me.

lidl_perfume
At £3.99 (for 50ml) I can afford to have a bit of a play with fragrance and yes it might be from Lidl but hey...I don't care.

Would you buy and wear perfume from Lidl? Have you tried any bargain basement perfumes?

Edit - Some people have asked about the Lidl perfume lasting. I find the lasting time of perfume differs greatly from person to person and perfume doesn't last especially long on me. I've worn the Lidl perfume 3 times now and it has lasted for arounc 6 hours each time which is about the same as the Chanel perfume for me.

TTFN,

P.S. No Keira Knightly advertising the Lidl either - another plus point.

  1. Yep I have this, and really like it. I couldnt care less where it comes from, as long as I like it. X

  2. You'd be a bit peeved about this if you were Chanel, wouldn't you!?

    1. Probably but I think they might be more concered with people passing off those fugly bags and cc earrings as the real thing?

  3. I think if I went to purchase it from Lidl I might be put off by it - thinking that it would smell cheap. Then again at £3.99 if I don't really use it I don't feel like I've wasted alot of money on something I'm not using.

  4. In a word - definitely! I have had copy perfumes before and my only reservation is that they tend not to last as long as the original. That said, at that price, who cares!! Hotfoots it down to local Lidl;)

  5. I'll have to give this a go because I have the Chanel version and I love it but a cheaper dupe for everyday wear is always a good thing x x

  6. I don't wear perfume but a lot of the ladies I know online here (in NL) go crazy for the LIDL perfume!

  7. I definitely need to give this a try as Chanel Mademoiselle is my everyday fragrance and it costs me a fortune in full size bottles and the handbag sprays etc (typical you can't buy the refils on their own have to buy with the purse spray case each time!) every few months.

This is worth just having handy on the desk at work/in the car etc to spray on when you need a spritz of something!

  9. I would if I liked that particular perfume, but I don't. I usually buy "dupe" perfumes online from a site called Perfume Parlour. They offer 3 25ml dupes for £20! The list of dupes is huge and they are pretty good. Not all the ones are exact dupes, but very close and don't smell cheap at all. You can even get a 10% discount by liking them on facebook. Here is the site for you if you fancy a look:

I've actually just bought 3 today!

  10. I'd definitely wear £3.99 perfume as long as it didn't smell like sweaty old men. I bought some perfume a while ago in the Boots sale and I really didn't want to because it was a Victoria Beckham one and I loathe celebrity perfumes but it was really, really nice and really cheap! Nobody can tell unless they have it themselves and then hopefully they'll feel the same sort of shame!

  11. hmm. an interesting q. And by the way, yes, you did the right thing by trying it and leaving it (used to work in perfume, and people were shocked when I used to spritz them with their chosen scent, then tell them to go away for 15 minutes, smell it again, and then make up their mind - what? no pushy sales assistant?!)

I think I'd give it a try, and maybe buy it if I was running low of fragrance, but then I'd be mortified if someone asked me what I was wearing. Yes, I admit I'm a perfume snob like that, but there we are. It's one of my 'things'.

What I have been doing though, is buying perfume that I used to wear 'back in the day'. Stuff like Lace, Le Jardin, that kind of thing. They cost are around the same sort of price and I just feel happier buying something that at least used to be well known. It helps that the scents take me back to my youth, it's like meeting an old friend.

But...... I am going to see if I can nip into a branch at the weekend, take a look and have a try! Why not? Fine for every day, no?

  12. I have been wearing Eau de lidl for yonks and brimming love it. Rumours were that Chanel were non of pleased. I buy 3 bottles at a time. All my fam and friends wear it too. Me my mum and my sis are huge fans. I spread the word on my blog last year but trouble with that is that everyone will be smelling the same x x

  13. Most definitely. In fact, I've been wearing M&S' Isis which smells like an Issey Miyake one and is very yummy too (although not as cheap as £3.99).

  15. Yup I'd totally wear a Lidl perfume. Or any other cheapo brand, if it smells nice.

I mean... I love D&G feminine SO much, but I just can't afford it. So I'm wearing a perfume from Avon that I got as part of a "buy X receive a bottle of Y free" type deal instead. It's pretty nice, for a freebie.

  16. Yes, yes and yes! Off to the shop now!

Btw, never buy dupes from dodgy websites. No idea what they put in them!

  20. I have eclectic taste in perfumes! My favourites are Dolce Vita and Ralph Rocks (which they don't make any more, but I can still get on ebay) but I also wear L'Occitane Rose de 4 Reines, and at the cheaper end, Sunflowers, 4711 and L'Aimant. I would have no problem whatsoever wearing the perfume from Lidl, but I am not familiar with it or with the Chanel's Coco Mademoiselle...I will have to check out the Lidl one next time I am there!

  21. My lidl had it on offer at 1.99 recently. It isn't for me (smells off on me), but I know loads of people that wear it

    ReplyDelete
  22. I have worn this since Frugal Queen reviewed it on her blog, and I came to the end of my eked out expensive stuff. I like smelling nice and not wasting money - it's a no-brainer to me!

  23. Absolutely! If only Lidl had a version of Ocean Dream by Giorgio Beverly Hills (the love of my life).

  25. I would buy lower cost perfume from a 'brand' (ie a brand I have heard of and is unlikely to burn my skin off). My favourite is Avon when they have an offer on; their £15-20 perfumes suddenly become £5-10. I have also shamelessly bought Katy Price perfume, I like the smell and if she's not been in the news recently and/or done something brazen the price goes down, mwahahaha!

  27. I've recently run out of my Coco Mademoiselle too, so I think I'll be trying out this! At £3.99 it's definitely worth trying even if you don't like it. Also love the point about no Keira Knightley advertising, she ruined my love for it a bit with those terrible adverts! XO.

  29. This is really good to know, thanks! I would wear a cheapie perfume, definitely. My favourite perfume is Prada Amber and it's sooooo expensive so for everyday wear I have taken to wearing Alex by Alex Curran! I'm not sure how much it was because it was a gift but she's definitely at the budget end of the celebrity perfume scale so it won't cost too much. At first I was a bit snobby about it, but it has a really fresh citrus-y floral scent and I love it. I'll definitely be trying the Suddenly one now!

    ReplyDelete
  30. This sounds great, I'd definitely try it as I love Coco mademoiselle :) I have a perfume from M&S which smells exactly like hugo boss intense, I always get that one now as it's so much cheaper!

  31. Yes, definitely worth a try! I rarely wear perfume unless I'm going out (once in a blue moon) so a bottle lasts me forever, but if you wear perfume regularly it's probably worth it. If I could just find cheap organic and non-animal tested perfume I'd be happy!

  33. I might wander down and take a look at this later as I am currently experiencing the 'coming to the end of the botttle' dilemma.
Thanks for bringing it to my attention! xx

  34. Bahaha that Keira Knightley comment in the end cracked me up! :D
Yes I actually tried supermarket perfumes two times: I don't know if they still have it, but I used to love "Tommy Girl" by Tommy Hilfiger when i was younger and they had a very similar one with the hilarious name "Jimmy Girl" (haha) at Aldi back then.
Also I once found a copy of "Miss Dior Cherie" at this tacky discount shop Kik, it was called "Records to Replay" there (haha, wtf? who invents these names?). However the cheap scent never lasted as long as the original, but it was okay for daily use though.

    ReplyDelete
  35. If it smelt nice, of course I would! I think I'd be less likley to pick it up in the first place though - I get too distracted by the odd crisps and cheap booze in Lidl :D

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'm a Chanel No 5 gal myself and yes, it's getting too pricey for my bijou beauty budget. I have tried to find cheaper alternatives and perhaps its the dupes I've tried, but my experience with them is that they smell very strongly of alcohol and very little else. However, having said that, I will definitely pop into my local Lidl and give this a "nose". Live in hope, die in despair, as my mother used to say. LOL!

  37. Now you reviewed it I would. I wear the Next Pink perfume (I dont know if its a replica?) and more often Marks and Spencers Isis (which is a copy of Issay Miyake). I have seen the Lidl perfumes but I worried they would smell like bubble bath so didnt bother lol.

  43. I use this! The price doesn't put me off at all. I even look out for when it's on offer and even cheaper, lol. It doesn't last very long on me, but neither do expensive perfumes. I didn't buy it because it was a rip off of Chanel, I just read lots of good reviews about it and liked the price. :-) xxx

  50. I've worn this for a while too. They also do the sets, probably near Christmas time. I'm also a fan of Aldi face creams and foundation. My daughter has been using the concealer, too many teenage late nights to cover up! Great posts, keep them coming.

  56. I've never tried the cheapies before, as a have a rather large backlog of perfumes that I scored at super-cheap prices! One chemist was selling off all their high-end testers for $10 each so I grabbed a bunch. After reading this post, I'll start sniffing out these copies now though xx

If someone is close enough to my wrist or neck to smell the difference and feel the need to comment negatively, they are probably close enough to be vulnerable too...
