The Month of Gifts

It seems like all the best people are born in March or April, because I've found myself out and about buying gift after gift for friends, family and colleagues. Do you find there's a month you have to give more birthday gifts? Maybe we're some how bizarrely attracted to people born in those months, if we're the common factor? Anyway, lots of buying. Of course I spread the spend and buy suitable gifts throughout the year but sometimes seasonal stock is just more appropriate for the recipient in question.
Floral writing set
I picked up this really rather gorgeous Caroline Gardner writing set for my lovely mother in law's birthday and the pattern is just so beautiful, I'm almost tempted to go back to Harriet & Dee (in Didsbury, Manchester) to buy another one for myself.
Lamb necklace Lamb necklace
Ah lambies. I love lambing season - anyone else a huge fan of Lambing Live on the BBC? My friend and I are thoroughly glued to the screen every year so it seemed only right to buy her this beautiful white lamb necklace from Finest Imaginary. How gorgeous is THAT?
iPhone goodies
One of my favourite ways to give gifts is in the form of a hamper or gift basket. I collect together small (and usually individually cheap) themed items, wrap them up nicely and bundle them into a cheap basket from a charity shop or bootsale.

My friend Rebecca, an iPhone addict recently turned 25 so I made up a little hamper of iPhone themed goodies. I know they're not the most frugal of objects but she loves hers (and I mine) and making up personalised hampers always feel so special even if the contents are actually quite cheap. I packed the hamper with iPhone gloves, iTunes vouchers, a couple of different iPhone coloured cases which you can pick up for around £2 including p&p here and a Cath Kidston gadget case. My little basket of gadget geekery was very well received

By the way, I've just spotted Cath Kidston have 15% off code which runs until 8am tomorrow (31/03/12), just enter 'EGGS' at the checkout
Blue and silver ring Blue ring
This blue ring was from Novica, which is a is a bit like Etsy or Folksy, featuring talented artists throughout the world making and selling accessories, homeware and scores of other beautiful things. I was given a credit to buy something so I could try out the service. I selected a silver and chalcedony ring made my an artisan called Bhavesh from India.

The piece itself is so beautifully made and interesting to look at that my friend has since claimed it as her own and more or less forced me into giving it to her as her 30th birthday present. The ring was beautifully presented in a pretty box and Bhavesh even sent a postcard from India.  I only became aware of Novica when they contacted me but since then I've spent hours on the site looking at the beautiful items the artisans from across the world have created. I'm even contemplating buying Mr Thrifty some cufflinks for his 30th, which do you like the best?
vintage pots 1970s orange and brown pots
In a local charity shop I picked up a set of 6 1970s plastic jars for a friend, although I'm sorely tempted to keep them for myself. I shan't, I shan't. I actually wrote a post about giving second hand gifts last year, what do you think of second hand gifts? Or even, a separate issue, regifting an item you've been given?
As to the vintage jars, I'll be filling them cupcake cases and sprinkles and adding in a cookery book and homemade apron because my friend is somewhat of a baking fiend.

TTFN,

P.S. Which month do you find yourself buying a squillion presents?

  1. October is my month of birthdays. From now until September I hardly have any.
I ask my family to give me second hand gifts from cs for Christmas. I've had some interesting and very welcome gifts. I try to give cs presents back (looking out all year for them), mainly because I'm fed up with the high street shops selling me crap labelled 'the perfect gift for Christmas'. Oh, don't get me started. xx

  2. They are all lovely presents. I like the hamper idea, because alot of thought has to go into that. I dont mind recieving second hand gifts, its the thought that goes into the gift I appreciate.

  3. I love those canisters! I always make a little bag full of presents instead of one big present, too. January is the worst for me; My Mum, Brother & boyfriend are all born within 13 days of each other.. All other friends have nicely spread out for me, haha. XO

  6. A really big family so we have birthdays all the time! I am always at my wits end as to what to buy and when. Food gifts are always welcome and a hamper (collected from food shops over the year with special offers on unusual items) is one of my favourites. The 'hamper' is some baskets collected from charity shops with home made labels and prettily packaged food stuffs. xx Love the blog.

  7. Hello,
I seem to know lots of Capricorns and am Capricorn myself, so maybe that counts for bdays in the same month.
I think secondhand gifts are no problem, especially nowadays when 'vintage' is so popular, though when I were a lass it was merely 'secondhand.' To be honest, if it pretty or lovely or cute, it doesn't matter if it is new or not.
Also, the real thing, ie truly old with a history, as opposed to Cath K's vintage look, is probably more desirable.
I think a hamper is a smashing idea. Lots of little goodies, a bit like winning pass the parcel lots of times. xxx

As for second hand gifts/regifting it depends on the person and occasion but will do it if appeopriate. One site I love for cheap but lovely gifts is sendathought.com loads to choose from for less than £10.

It seems to be never ending present buying from March to August, plus lots of little Birthday gifts for my daughters friends.. Oh and party bags fir their parties.. I go over the top and end up making hair accessories etc which probably end up stuffed down the back of car seats :)
    A great post x

  14. I love the writing set (lucky mother-in-law!). I like the idea of putting little gifts together...I gave my mum dad and brother each a stocking each one year, full of gifts picked out especially for them. This year, I have seen a vintage biscuit tin I know my mum will like and am thinking I will fill it full of foody treats.
I didn't do this for my wedding list...we asked people to give tokens towards our wedding photography costs (soooo expensive) but was thinking the other day, what if we'd given guests a list of our sought-after vintage items/ things we collect to look out for...so yes I think it is ok to give second-hand gifts!!! :)

  18. As a family we have decided not to do adult birthday gifts any more. I give a small donation to my two nephews three children, the mums can decide what to spend it on. If I want to give a gift I will give it at any time of the year, and it will be something I've made.

  21. I always have a busy birthday season May-July. I combine bought-round-the-year presents and special summery ones. I don't mind 2nd hand at all, several people have been given (or have given me) cleaned up bootsale finds. A mate gave me about £50+ worth of vintage EPNS, Pewter and a couple of bits of real silver, and declared they all came from bootsales and had been scrubbed up with brasso and toothpaste. I loved them, they look fantasic! She put them in a basket too.
