My Favourite Charity Shop Finds

As a charity shop blogger you may have guessed tha I buy a large amount of my clothes and furniture from charity shops. I try choose wisely and hope to only buy things I love and will stand the test of time in our home but it’s still easy to have favourites.
My favourite ever charity shop finds?

Vintage nurse cape
Vintage Nurse Cape
When I first stumbled upon this old cape in a charity shop I thought it was a blanket and almost put it back on the rail before discovering it was a cape and was most definitely coming home with me. Readers told me it had history and was an old nurses cape so I did a little research. Turns out my mother in law, a former nurse, had one, complete with hood, when she was a nurse in the 60s and 70s so I think she’d be baffled to see me larking around in it in the name of fashion.

Vintage Media Unit
1950s cocktail cabinet
This 1950s cocktail cabinet makes me happy, so, so happy. We’re using it at dual purposes, number one as storage for our glassware, spirits and other cocktail paraphernalia and uptop for our games consoles, television and stereo equipment etc. I’m all for people using second hand furniture in a puritan sense but my home isn’t a museum and I need to make things work for our modern day lifestyle. It was important to find a piece that could do two things in a small space and look beautiful so I was thrilled to find this cocktail cabinet for £30 in a charity shop just outside Manchester.

Lloyd Loom blanket chest
Lloyd Loom
Our Lloyd Loom blanket box at a £1 bargain now houses my handbag collection and leaves plenty of room for extra seating up top. I know a lot of people would make it over but I love it the way it is.

My wedding shoes
Pink glittery shoes
I found these pink glittery heels in a Bath charity shop a month before our wedding. They were brand new, still in their box and priced at £5, a bargain for Bath charity shops. I knew instantly that they’d add just enough pop and a bit of fun to my calf length ivory wedding dress. I still wear them for special occasions now.

I’ve had some other favourites over the years but I’ve gone on to sell them once they didn’t fit or work for our lifestyle. These are my current favourites but I’m sure I’ll be able to change my favourites list as time goes on…the beauty of shopping charity shops!

  1. Love this post! Not sure about my faves, I would have to think about it but my dressing table in my bedroom and my recently found vintage mirror are in the top 5!

  2. My mum used to wear a nurses cape to work although hers had crossover straps rather than a zip it was our favourite piece in the dressing up box wish I still had it….nice find rx

  3. Oooh, have you ever blogged your wedding? I’d love to have a nose!

I think my best ever find was a vintage art-deco style half-moon handbag which I bought for about £1.50 8 years ago – always, always get compliments on it!

  4. Great finds – I do remember that cape! My favourite find may be the Barbara Hulaniki tweed jacket that I bought in the ’80s, wore to death and finally grew out of. How I mourn for that jacket!

  5. These are all beautiful! I love your cocktail cabinet, there’s one in Bolton at the moment I’d be so tempted to buy if I only had the space!

Choosing my favourites is tough! Probably my 1970s floral ottoman, my set of three green suitcases, & my floral little table are my favourites at the moment! With a house full it’s hard to pick!

    Catherine, XO.

  6. My favourite find is your cape!

I scored the find of the decade a few weeks ago. A Beautility sideboard in mint condition for EIGHT BRITISH POUNDS!

  12. Those shoes are just fabulous! My fave ever charity shop find is a 1950’s lamp. I just love the curvatire on the base and updated it so easily with a new shade.

I’m not sure I could pick my favourite charity shop find, maybe my art deco teacups? And I love all my very cheap 60s bud vases as a display put together from finding them second hand

  14. If you decide to sell on that cape, email me!!!

I’m a working nurse and still wear a cap despite graduating this century.

    Please, please? I’ll stop grovelling

  15. Please, please email me if you consider selling that cape!!???

I’m a working nurse and would love to have it. Despite graduating this century, I wear a cap and full whites to work much to the amusement of my younger coworkers and the delight of some of the patients.

  16. Wow the cocktail cabinet is beautiful! I adore second hand furniture. In Brighton we have a place called Shabitat which is a huge warehouse packed full of furniture. There is a lot of awful stuff, but I’ve got some great bargains in there! My favourite find was a really long mahagony desk for a tenner! It was more of a dressing table really but I used it as my sewing desk and just put some new handles on it. Sadly, this weekend I took it back to Shabitat as I don’t have room for it in my new house and will need to hunt down one that is 10 inches smaller. I did however come out with a wheelbacked chair for £7.50! I’ve wanted one for ages!

I also collect willow pattern china – and have got all of mine from carboots for 1 or 2 pounds – the antique shops are always selling them for about £30 a pop!

Love your shoes too! They are stunning! It’s good to know you still get to wear them on those special occasions too.

  22. All of them are excellent buys! I’d love a nurses cape!

  28. I have a nurses cape from the ’40s … it’s wool, and its wonderful! The epaulets are divine! But mine came from a dead man’s closet (for real) and not a charity shop. They are so hard to find in thrift stores! The Thrift Gods BLESSED YOU CHILD!! Xo

  29. lovely post…my favorite find was a vintage pale pink linen dress…buttoned up the front, nipped in waist…long since worn out but the memory remains for my sister and I…we shared the dress and both felt like the Queen of Everything when wearing it…

  30. I LOVE your nurses cape and if you ever decide to sell it (why would you lol), ask me first please. In the 1970’s, when I was a wee girl I watched a TV programme called Angels (updated in the 2000’s to No Angels), and I loved it. They wore capes on the show and I dreamed of growing up to be a nurse and wearing a cape. I did indeed become a nurse at 18 in 1989 but by then, the hospital I trained at had gotten rid of their capes and introduced horrible blue nylon jackets :(
