The Little Vintage Tea Trolley

Tea Trolley
For a long time I've wanted somewhere to store and organise my baking equipment (you know the stuff that gets lost in the back of cupboard and ends up going out of date) without cluttering up the work tops in our tiny kitchen. I'd considered buying this white trolley from Ikea and I'd seen a few wooden vintage trolleys on eBay and in charity shops which looked good but were either too expensive or impractical when it came to cleaning them.
Baking trolley
Then last week Mr Thrifty came home from work dumped his bag and went back out without saying a word, which is most unlike him even if we've had a barney. Five minutes later he is whistling his way through the flat and to my surprise he is pushing a trolley, a gold, kitsch tea trolley at that.  He'd spotted it in a skip on his way to work, called in on his bike on his way home to ask if he could have it and popped back out to pick it up after dumping his bag. Gotta love him, eh?

It's in remarkably good condition with only a little rust on the wheels. It has cleaned up well (isn't scraping stickers off FUN? Not) and is far sturdier than you'd imagine. I had the word PROJECT, PROJECT, PROJECT ringing in my ears for the first day or so but for now I'm happy with the way it is...although it may get the spray paint treatment at some point in the future. The people who let Mr Thrifty take it out of their skip had their kindness returned with a big fat cake and a bottle of homemade sloe gin the next day.
Tea trolley becomes baking trolley
And of course, she (it's a girl natch) needs a name. I'd like to introduce you to Pamela McGilderson, or Pam to her friends. Say hi to Pam.

TTFN,

P.S. What do you think?

  3. Swoon! I love it! (not that I have anywhere to keep a trolley, but still). And when you've baked you can wheel it around to serve Black Forest Gateau and oranges in caramel and such retro treats. The dessert trolley was the best bit of going to old school seaside hotels with my grandparents.

A big gold star for Mr Thrifty, what a legend.

Take a look at Teawagon tales blog and see how Jane has prettified her tea trolleys (yes, she has more than one). Swoonworthy. xx

  12. Trolleys are SO useful. I need one. I want a 70s one with a heated interior though, from which to reveal my moussaka or macaroni or other retro-exotic treats....

  14. Just did a double take - my parents used to have the exact same trolley.I remember them buying it one Christmas, probably late 70s. It used to rattle all the plates and cups and spill the tea if you pushed it too fast fully loaded!

  15. Well would you believe it! We are trolly twins! I just bought the same type of trolley for £2 in a charity shop the other day. I'm also using mine for storage in the kitchen. Cookery books at the bottom and tins on the top. I've wanted one for ages too. I'm super pleased with my find and well done on yours too! ;O)

  21. Well done Mr Thrifty. I bought a wooden one at the bootie last year (quite a biggie). Its even got sprung wheels! A bargain for £2 although I did get some funny looks wheeling it back to my car - like "what the hell do you want that for". It is still waiting for a makeover but I cant decide what to do with it yet. Any suggestions? xxxx

  33. My mum used to have a trolley just like this when I was a kid. When I had birthday parties she used to wheel it out into the living room with all treats on it. Haven't got a clue where it is now, sad times.
P.S I love your blog. I also love the thrifty life! x
