I'm a fan of cheap and cheerful nail varnish but it does tend to dry out or go gloopy in the bottle after a while. Here are my top tips for reviving nail polish thus saving it from the bin and saving you from having to buy more. Thrifty, non?
Is your nail varnish gloopy, sloppy or even separated?

Give it a good shake then pop it in the fridge. All of my gloopy and separated nail varnished now live in my fridge. They glide on perfectly but remember to put them back or they'll return to their grim ways.
Has your nail varnish dried up or become hard?
Add two small drops of nail varnish remover to the bottle. Close and shake like a mo fo.I've also found putting the nail polish bottle into a bowl of very hot water (not boiling) for 10-15mins works well.
TTFN,
P.S. What is your favourite colour nail varnish? Mine is currently navy.

Great advice!
ReplyDeleteI know it's slightly less thrifty, because you'd have to buy something, but I really like Mavala's nail polish thinner. A few drops, a shake and a few minutes later the polish is good as new :)
I shake the nail varnish but didn't know about the fridge trick - will try that.
ReplyDeleteMy mum gave me a nail polish called Sequined Turqoise - I've had it in my handbag for about a week - I'm going to paint them tonight to wear to the social media conference tomorrow
Great tips, I've got a rimmel nail varnish that needs reviving. My favourite colour at the moment is a yellow Accessorize one. xx
ReplyDeleteYes I always do the nail varnish remover trick, works well. Never thought about hot water but will give it a try. There is no room in my fridge for all my nail varnishes!
ReplyDeleteFave colour combo is currently OPI 'Louvre Me, Louvre me Not' (purple) with Revlon 'Facets of Fuchsia' (black base, purple glitter) over the top. It's nice and Halloween-y!
I have been adding remover to dodgy nail varnish for a while now, but never heard of putting it in the fridge.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite nail varnish colour at the moment has to be http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Q4SXot75pcY/TbiaBtHEZMI/AAAAAAAADDA/8LDXdT1JWIE/s1600/1795.jpg this type of colour, definitely not the brand that is shown as I would never spend a ridiculous amount of money on nail varnish, but that colour.
Echo Lakota above... especially for fridge space!
ReplyDeleteLavender or pale pinks have always been my faves... Love to see other colours on other people tho'... just not brave enough to wear them myself!
I had also never heard of the fridge thing, I have one now I can try that on.. thank you.
ReplyDeletePS. Also loving navy at the minute!
A the old fridge one two! My nan has done this for as long as I can remember - for all her nail polishes.
ReplyDeleteFave colour? Hmmm... nude.
I have a whole draw of gloopy nail polish. Instead of sorting it out, I keep buying new. will have to give this a try.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for this tip! I'll have to try the fridge for sure. I usually do the drops of nail varnish remover but find it still goes all funny.
ReplyDeleteI think another thing that helps is making sure you keep them upright. I tend to throw mine all into a drawer and this I think has definitely made it worse!
I do that fridge thing too and I find it works well.
ReplyDeleteI started using Zoya brand a while back. There is no such thing as eco or organic nail polish because frankly its a chemical cocktail, but Zoya has less harmful 'stuffs', primarily formaldehyde. I am using Petra shade just now, here is a linky http://www.beverlybeaute.com/shop/goods/goods_view.php?&goodsno=2934&category=006
ReplyDeleteI love navy nails though, very classy.

My (not so thrift OPI) nail polish went gloopy and adding a touch a nail polish remover really did work a treat. Saved me money AND heart ache!
ReplyDeleteCurrently top of my faves- GOSH duochrome purple/green and black with a glittery top coat.
We always do the fridge thing in our house, works a treat.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite? Red, say nothing! lol

In the fridge?
ReplyDeleteSeriously, that is great news.
I have an oldy shade of rose pink which I like on my toes in the summer- it's a bit past it now, and I haven't found a decent colour match anywhere- but I think you've just saved it from the bin!
Cheers.
Xx
I've heard that the nail polish remover will break down you polish when used for thinning. Nail polish thinner from the beauty supple store can also be used to extend your fave discontinued color.
ReplyDeleteI bought some Orly thinner a couple of years back on eBay for about a fiver, and it works wonders at saving old favourites. You literally just need a couple of drops, so it's worth the initial spend as it lasts forever. I'm currently loving metallics, but not glitters, on my fingers, and deep purple or navy on my toes. My pet hate - for me, although they look good on other people - is nude shades which make me look like a shop dummy.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny how the NV remover works isn't it? You'd think it would bleach the colour out or something! Well, I'm no chemistry scholar so what would I know. Current fave is Barry M's Coral but you've inspired me to go with Navy, esp as it's getting wintry!
ReplyDeleteGood tips, thanks I shall use them myself I have gloopy and hard nail polishes in need of a new lease of life x
ReplyDeleteGreat tips, I've got a rimmel nail varnish that needs reviving. My favourite colour at the moment is a yellow Accessorize one. xx
ReplyDeletetable top fridge
I need to revive a gorgeous pink Claire's one from ages ago, even though it only cost about £2.25!
ReplyDeleteArgghhh still the old wives tale of remover being used as thinner. There is no substitute for nail polish thinner, if you really want your nail polish to last! Think about the chemical reaction between polish and remover - it does not make for increasing the longevity of your polish, this is why thinner was invented. Thinner is super cheap, it's not like it costs you a lot more to use.
