How to Make a Friendship Bracelet for Free

Friendship bracelets are right up there in the style stakes at the moment plus they are just a lovely thing to give to a friend. I recently fashioned matching friendship bracelets for my friend and I (twee, no?) from the loops of fabric you find inside clothes for hanging purposes.
I always cut off these tiny loops of fabric as soon as I get an item of clothing home, I hate how they peek out of clothes or get trapped in my bra straps. Whilst lopping off the latest batch the other day I noticed how pretty the colours were and that they were, in essence, just ribbon - so made a quick bracelet for my friend.

How to make a friendship bracelet for free
1. Take 6-8 ribbon loops from your clothes and cut to the same length (measure wrist size and add around 3 extra inches). Cut at a slant so the fabric doesn't fray too much, although I kind of like the frayed look here.
 2. Tie a knot so that around 1 inch of the ribbons are out the other side of the knot and the remainder on the other.
3. Plait (braid) all the way down until there's only about 3 inches left.
4. Tie a knot so that around 1 inch of the ribbon is loose on the other side of the knot.
5. Tie the ends together (or poke the one knot through the end of the plait and secure), et voila a friendship bracelet.

What do you think?

  2. Love this post! My Mr always asks me why I cut out and keep them and I always reply with 'because someday they will come in use'! This day has come :)

  4. I love these, and the free ribbon that you get in all clothes, those loops are never the right length to actually hang anything, so i cut them out too, i have a whole coffee jar full of them on my haberdashery shelf, and like to use them for little crafty projects.

  5. These are lovely. I used to make these with embroidery yarn when I was a student - slightly more complicated process involving a huge number of strands for any degree of thickness, but very similar result. Maybe I should start them up again now they're back on trend and go for a wee shop! The link below shows how to do that type:

  12. Aha! Good idea! I always cut them out and use them as the hangy loop thing when I make lavender sachets, they're normally just the right length :)

  13. Really pretty bracelet. I also save all these ribbons and just used some to make a pearl and ribbon necklace.

  18. I always keep the ribbons off tops 'loops', also the ribbons that hold on price labels in nicer high street shops and the (papery/gift) ribbons often used to tie together PJ sets. I'm glad I'm not the only one! I mainly use mine for gift wrapping but I might well give this a go.

  20. ah, this made me smile - I recently stayed a few days back at my mum's and on my bedside table were a little stash of these bits of ribbon that she had cut out of all her tops just for me as she knew I like making them from them... not tried the friendship braceltes from them yet so that will now be top of my to-do list
