How to Keep Spiders Away

I can’t even begin to tell you how scared I am of spiders and living in a basement flat means we were over run by them when we first moved in. A few of these tactics have helped keep spiders away (I know they get rid of other bugs but my need for sleep is greater than that) for the most part.

How to keep spiders away

1. Keep clutter at bay. Put washing and ironing away as soon as possible to stop spiders finding home in folded piles. Give everything a place and put it back in that place.
2. Make sure all food (both yours and pet) is well covered. These attract flies which in turn attract spiders.
3. Keep your garden looking spic and span. Store pots, tins and wood away from your house. Remove cobwebs and then brush paths with hot water, borax and a stiff brush.
4. Rub lemon peel around door frames – inside and out. Apparently spiders aren’t too fond of this for one reason or another.

5. Make sure your house is well dusted on a regular basis, don’t give spiders the time or privacy to set up home.
6. Gather conkers and line them around the exterior and interior walls of your house (when doing it inside check them once every couple of weeks just to make sure they don’t rot).
7. Burn cinnamon oil in an oil burner.
8. Put one part coconut oil to 2 parts white vinegar into a spray bottle and spray around common spider entry points.

TTFN,

P.S. How do you deal with spiders?

Comments

  1. So glad I have seen this, I literally can’t sleep at the moment because I know the great massive spiders are moving in! OH works nights so it’s always just me cornered by one. I will be doing all of these!! Thank you x x x

  2. Ive heard of the conker one before, how strange they dont like them! xx

  3. Tina Of CAST FALL says:

Spiders are mad why are they scared of these things out of everything out there???! i am going to try all of them tho.

  4. Living alone you just have to brave it and catch them – a glass and piece of card is my weapon of choice.
I am also the appointed spider-catcher at work. When one appears they all start hopping about and shouting for me to catch it and take it outside (even the fellas!!)

  5. The spiders we get are so huge they just make me freeze! We have a spider catcher from Lakeland and I can’t even use it, my poor disabled husband has too.

I might try some of these, ours seem to run out from under the sofa when it’s evening and I’m watching telly WHAAAAAAA!

  6. great tips. Im not overly bothered by spiders (although dont like them crawling near me) but my little girl hates them. Love the conker & lemon tips-so clever

  7. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

  8. may have to try the lemon peel one…we have had some massive spiders the last few days, I think theyre coming in through the chimney…my bf is a big girls blouse and I have to trap them under a glass and throw them out lol.

  9. brilliant post, thank you so much both me and my mum are terrifed of them, i didnt know some of those tip but i will but putting them in to action! We get sooooo scared if we see them we have even roped strangers off the street before to help us if we see one when my dad or husband is out. First though you have to find mens shoes and put them on and stuff them with tissue so the spider cant touch your feet! x

  10. My house is FILLED with conkers for that very reason!!! Got my OH to pick up pocket fulls of them last year but will have him on the lookout again! And it actually worked last year – before I had the conkers, we saw 7 massive ones in the house, and not one afterwards. We’ve just moved house tho and had not got chance to put them out yet and one biggie appeared (just as I was getting into bed I saw something out of the corner of my eye run under it…. eeekkkkk!!) Anyway, after that, the conkers were put straight out :) Will give some of your other tips a try too tho, will take all the help I can get!! x

  11. Oh my goodness, your comment about folded laundry has freaked me out! You know how some things just stick in your head? That tip will now never leave mine! *shudder* Really interesting tips – I’d not heard any of those before. Thanks!

  12. How do I deal with spiders? I scream, run away, and get Mr Jelly to come and remove the 8 legged beastie! I have even been known to wake him up when he is sleeping because he has been working nights to remove a spider! Will try your tips, thanks Thrifty!

  14. Best, most useful blogpost ever for us arachnophobes! Now I know how to get rid of the big spider living in a hole by the kichen radiator if I only dare get close enough!

  15. Get a cat! Mine loves chasing down, torturing and eating every spider that dares to come inside. It is her snack (yuck)

  16. We live near a lot of fields so get a lot of spiders, thankfully none of us are scared of them, some even have pet names. Rudolph lived on the stairs – he came one Christmas :)
However my poor MIL is terrified of them and your post reminded me of naughty Mr Twigs teasing her one day. She had lined up a load of conkers next to the patio doors. He asked her if they scared spiders away. She said yes, he then said why is that spider sat on top of the conker sniffing it then :)
    Naughty boy !!
    Twiggy x
PS I’m scared of moths, so feel your pain!!

  17. Tina Of CAST FALL says:

Back to say that I have been out to get conkers with the kids.

  18. I have to say, the best way I’ve ever found of getting rid of spiders is to call my Dad and ask him to do it. I’m 25, but still a daddy’s girl :)

    • Skellyfree says:

Jude – I am 43 and STILL have my dad, with failing eyesight, who, thankfully, lives to the back of my flat, to come and get nasties.

I will be trying as many as I can. I understand that a citronella oil and water spray is another effective remedy to deter the creepy-crawlies…

  19. So you dont recommend the hoover or a heavy shoe then? Suppose prevention is better than the cure. Is it just me or are they getting bigger?

  20. Brill!!!

  21. Awesome post! I mostly don’t freak out until i see them moving and then tell the husbando to get it out of the house :P

  22. when we lived in a basement flat not only did we get spiders galore but slugs as well (grim!) any tips for getting rid of those?

  23. Thank you, thank you for all these tips – I love conkers and just knew they’d be my friends!

Usually I get Mr EM to deal with ‘spiddies’, but once on my own at night and finding a biggie in a shoe left in the bedroom, I freaked out, unable to get into bed for fear it would run across the bedclothes. Back downstairs I rang my daughter for help. She advised glass and cardboard etc,etc but when I continued to weep and wail she suddenly shouted, “Oh call the police then!” and put the phone down. Believe me, I very nearly did.

  24. I’ll pass this on to my folks. Now I know what to do to encourage spiders XD I love the little critters so won’t be doing any of the prevention methods (obviously I keep my house clean and tidy lol) We have an albino colony in the cellar which scares the gas/electric man but no way are we killing them

  25. Oh, I love it. I’m definitely going to be trying some of these out this year! We get the biggest spiders I’ve ever seen in London which I find bizarre because I grew up in the Scottish countryside and thought for sure they’d be bigger out there. Apparently not, though!

    Bonfire Brunette

  26. I scream and get someone else to remove them. And the conker thing too.

Now if only the cat would exhibit proper cat-like behaviour and actually chase spiders for me instead of looking gormlessly at them, I would be fine!

I am really freaked out after reading this, keep thinking I can see spiders running around in the corner of my eye!!!

ME TOO! i actually just had a mini heart attack from it lol, found one crawling on me a half an hour ago and now im debating whether my bed is sleepable or not lol

  28. Oooh I like these tips! In my house, I’m the one who deals with spiders, my mum is absolutely terrified of them! I don’t like them, but I can get near enough to kill them!
With conkers, I’m surprised a scientist hasn’t found out which chemical is the spider deterrent and then use it to make a spray/plug-in, I imagine it would sell well!

  30. I blummin’ hate the feckers! Have tried conkers but to no avail, maybe I needed more. Perhaps i should de-clutter too.
    Thanks!

  31. I ALWAYS shake any garment that’s been hanging up in the house before putting it on,and Mr Boo is reminded(constantly)NEVER to put anything from the garage into the car without checking for S…..S first.
I’ve read that strong smelling floral sprays work well as a deterrent.

  32. Intresting post!

  33. Just reading about the ghastly things gives me the heebie jeebies. I’ve heard that they are attracted to low/medium level humming – that’s why they often appear when the television is on. My tip, make sure your windows are shut when you vacuum or use a hairdryer. Hx

  34. Ahhh. I love spiders. As does my cat, Memphis. It is a constant battle between me and him as to whether or not Mrs Pider is rescued or padded, nosed and then nommed.

  35. Thank you for this post. I hate them and admit I usually resort to the hoover as I can’t get close enough for a glass. I knew there had to be a good use for conkers.
    Gillx

  36. Genius. Thanks so much for this. I live with four boys who find it absolutely hilarious to capture enormous spiders and place them in upturned glasses on my coffee table. Anything to stop this torment!

  37. I’ve given up on trying to get rid of the spiders… they’re like grey hairs, get rid of one and 2 more come back in it’s place!!! LOL!

  38. I actually leave the spiders in the hope they will eat the moths I am plagued with! Great tips though my brothers are terrified of them so will pass it on :)

  39. I hate spiders, as in I will cry if I see one. I’ve had a serious phobia for most of my life, so this post is great for me! I knew some of these, but the lemon peel and coconut/white vingear spray are new ones to me. Will definitely give it a go, because I found a massive beast friday morning, and ended up screaming the whole building down!

I heard about the conkers so went out to collect some and found a spider inside a half opened conker shell (don’t know the right name – the spiky bit!)
I resorted to the stinky but effective citronella oil, just wipe it over any surface you don’t want a spider on (!) it stinks the house out for a day or so, but I haven’t seen a spider for weeks

HELLLLLLPPPPPP I dont have any bloody conkers or lemons and there one in the bath size of my hand arrrggghhhh!!!!

  42. Anonymous says:

The best thing is cats- since we got ours we haven’t seen any big spiders. I think they eats them!

  44. Okay now I am headed to google to discover what in America a conker is! :)

  45. Anonymous says:

I have been spraying Detol with a lemon scent. But tonight there were 3 spiders in my kitchen. Sprayed more and hoovered up those little terrors.

I don’t think spiders know what they can do to us humans!!!!

  46. Thank you for this, I feel like I haven’t slept for weeks, keep waking up every couple of hours and needing to do a re-check round the room with a torch. I’m seriously phobic of them. Found this post on google after spending a couple of hours hoovering every milimetre of my room this afternoon, only to walk into the bathroom just now and spotting a massive one behind the door. It hid before I had the chance to get my mum and now we can’t find it :( I’m so scared :(

  47. Yeah I feed them to my cat too, win-win situation.

  48. I am a huge coward over spiders. I scream for my husband and hide whilst he gets rid. If he isn’t home I hoover them up and leave the hoover running for a few minutes to make sure they are really dead.

I dont’ believe for one second they are more scared of me than I am of them. Just no.

  49. Thanks so much for this post im also super scared of those pesky spiders! :(
I use the lemon peel but mainly I use peppermint oil where they normally appear and have chaulked up any cracks in my flat but if all esle fails my trusty dyson sucks them up and then I stuff the end of the dyson with loo roll. So glad to hear im not on my own with trying tips to rid our lives of the evil feckers :)

  50. Thank u ever so much for this post :) I will try anything to keep those pesky spiders from scaring me silly. I tried conkers but maybe no enough of them tho. The lemon peel helps a bit but I found that they hate peppermint oil too so I put drops in the areas they tend to show up. I also chaulked and filled any gaps. If all those fail the trusty Dyson is there to suck them up and then stuff toilet paper to block them from getting out. Then waiting until my neighbour will empty it for me :( Im going to go find more conkers :)

  52. *shudder* I live alone and my phobia is causing me massive issues at the moment as the hairy feckers keep leaping out at me…

Waiting for the conker trees at work to ripen and let me collect some, I had them all round my old flat and only saw 1 spider in 2 and a half years. Gaaaaaah!!

  53. Kaitie says:

So had waken up this morning with my dear hubby and just before he left I crawled back into bed well as far as I know there had never been a spider in our bed. So my dear hubby leaves for work and I’m just relaxing enjoying me time before the girls woke up and I felt something on my arm so thinking it was a hair brushed it off and continued to rest with my hand at my side well then the same feeling I had before was on my hand so curiosity struck and I looked this time sure enough a big ol nasty spiders sitting right there on the top of my hand ( reaction scream an squish it with other hand ) now I’m trying to lay in bed and we did a look and shook out blankets etc. but I swear just the thought is giving me creepy craw lies all over my body I can’t sleep … :(

  54. What are Conkers! I need them!
