Ten Bootsale Tips
1. Lots of bootsale sellers will change the price based on who you are or the look you convey. I recommend wearing jeans and a scuzzy hooded top and don't take that screamy-screamy-floral-floral Cath Kidston bag with you for goodness sake. That screams 'I will pay almost anything for a pretty saucer'. I wear trainers, my painting skirt and my uni netball jumper (Wing Attack, what were you?) and carry my money in my pocket (I'm known for just putting my bag down wherever I go and I don't want someone buying it.)

2. Play dumb (a bit). If it is openly obvious that you like something the price, as most bootsalers don't pre-price with labels, will likely get bumped up. If I think something might be valuable or something I covet I'll look at something else on the stall whilst slyly eyeing it from afar before declaring 'that's unusual, I've never seen anything like that before' and giving it a quick once over to see what the backstamp/aging is like.
3. Ask for more. Yep it isn't a shop but sometimes if you ask if the seller if they have anything else of a similar age that they might be looking to sell, they'll say yes. Many a time I've noticed that a lot of the stuff a seller has for sale is of a similar age and style and it turns out they are selling off items after a death or house clearance. More often than not they'll indicate that they're planning to come back on another date with other items or take your details and get in contact at a later date if they're having a garage or estate sale.

4. Get on your hands and knees and search through the boxes on the floor. The best things are hidden in boxes and baskets. Sellers tend to put things that they think are valuable up front and in prime positions but more often than not the things they think are valuable are very different to your idea of valuable.
5. Take some packaging with you. Sellers often underestimate the amount of bags and packaging they need. I take one large shopper filled with 5 smaller bags (string bags are useful as they expand.) I also pack a newspaper so I can wrap delicate items. There is nothing worse than finding something perfect at a bootsale only for it to break in the car on the way home.
6. Haggle but not too much. Is there really any point making a fool of yourself over 20p?
7. Make a day of it. Mr Thrifty and I take a look at the local bootsales in the papers and those a little further afield on websites and work out a big loop of a journey in order to include them all. Whilst it is a good rule to get there early, there are also lots of bargains to be had later in the day. Often sellers will just leave items or shout out 'everything is 10p' because they don't want to take anything home with them. Working out a day route means you can hit some early and some later on in the day and hopefully get best of both worlds.

8. Check items for damage and sizing. Make sure labels can be peeled off without damaging the item.
When buying clothing check the seams, size and armpits. You don't want to buy an item with pit stains unless you plan to chop it up.
9. Don't be afraid to ask for a discount if you're buying multiple items from one seller. The worst they can say is no.

10. I keep a list of spaces in my house that I want to fill or things I need, with measurements listed next to them. So it is useful to take a tape measure to make sure that the item will fit well when you get it home.

P.S. Which bootsales do you go to? What are your bootsale tips?

We don't have bootsales here (sob) but if we did, I would use all of your sage tips. I LOVE that kitsch tray!

Oh, our Misters would have so much in common sometimes. It's more garage sale than boot sales where I'm from, but every now & then some pretty awesome boot sales get organised. I haven't been in so long & after this post I really want to go to one!
ReplyDeleteGK or C back in the day. Netball was the only sport I ever really liked.
ReplyDeleteI've never been to a boot sale. What a sheltered life I lead! But if I ever do, I shall heed your sage words.
Want that cake in previous post. Hand it over please.
I love car boot sales! I've not been to one yet this year but the trusty weekly flea market is keeping me sane right now! Really good tips, I never really thought how the seller reacts to people in different clothing! I'm gonna go super casual next time...

Ooh, wonderful tips love!
ReplyDeleteI should do that for my charity shop finds.
LOVE everything you bought, esp the Urban Outfitters top. Clever find!
Have a great weekend,
Gem x
These are really good tips, I never thought about what you wear being a factor!! I haven't been to a car boot in years, but I've been meaning to go every week!
ReplyDeleteI carry my Cath Kidston messenger bag with me and it doesn't seem to make a difference to prices. I think they are immune to it in this neck of the woods! I like to carry a big bag as I have so many things I have to take like sunscreen and hats and drinks for the kids. Actually that's one of my bootsale top tips as the amount of little ones with no sun protection is scary.
ReplyDeleteSome great tips, Thrifty!
ReplyDeleteRegarding clothing, I agree about not wearing your best designer clothes, but as I usually wear vintage, that's what I wear to boot sales. Price wise, I have an idea in my head what I'd like to pay for an item, then negotiate if it's too high. That said, I don't haggle as much as some people!
I hated netball - got hit by the ball too many times. Hockey was my thing (Left or Right Inner), but I was pretty rubbish at it.
I used to really enjoy boot sales, but then I began going with hubby - who managed to kill any enjoyment I got. He spends hours trawling through CD's, DVD's or computer techy stuff - and walks on ahead when I'm trying to draw his attention to something I might have fancied. As he always carries the money, too (he considers his pockets safer than mine) it's completely hopeless. I now wait in the car. :(
ReplyDeletegreat tips! i was so looking forward to hitting the bootsales to fill my new home, But now i've gone and broken my foot, looks like I'll have to wait a while longer :(
ReplyDeleteHappy to have "met" you via your comment on my post! Your tips are all great. We don't have "boot sales" as such, and I'm not a huge garage sale-er....but I've found your dress code works for thrift stores, too!
ReplyDeleteI also usually pile up a pile of stuff and ask wistfully, what will you charge me for all of this. Sometimes get a better deal than just buying one or two items....It really helps to know the cashier, too.
Oh, at garage sales, I ALWAYS check out the "free" box first!
Great tips for boot sales. Never given much thought to what I wear to go car booting - it's usually jeans and a top. I'd also add that it's worth having a bottle of water with you as going round hot boot sale fields can be very thirsty work. Love the Urban Outfitters top you found.
ReplyDeleteOh your tips are amazing, especially the first one, makes a lot of sense, I always wondered why the sellers kept changing the prices. I love a bootsale, here they're more on the line of flea markets and there's a big one that happens every Sunday and Tuesday that is simply amazing I can't believe some of the things you can find there.
ReplyDeleteNice tips! I am so bad at bootsales, I walk far too slowly and look at absolutely everything! It takes hours. My favourite boot is Eccleshall in Staffs, but unfortunately I live on the wrong side of the pennines and don't get to go often! I was Goal Defence, by the way! (Although I preferred to play on the wing.)
ReplyDeleteIf there is a serious addiction to boot sales, I have it..haha :P My Hubby and I go most weekends. I think your tips are really good. I agree with getting there early, before the items get snapped up. I also agree about searching in the boxes of things, I have found some great things by rummaging around in the..it is well worth it.
ReplyDeleteGreat tips and I was goal defence btw :-)
ReplyDeleteI love that red floral top by the way and hadn't really thought of how what I wear could influence price.
We go to a car boot in Leamington Spa, its a fairly affluent area so we always go hoping to find something great.
X
My tip,
ReplyDeleteget a shopping trolley !
Theres nothing worse than struggling with several bags and trying to rummage through the goodies, so much easier if you can just bung it in your trolley, and pull it around. I got mine for £2 at a charity shop, I don't know why they arn't more popular, it beats carring heavy bags !!!
lovely post:D
ReplyDeleteI've been having a clear out so was selling at a car boot today,a local one run by the greedy council who charged ten quid a car and didn't think to put adverts up for it,so only a handful of people turned up! :0(
ReplyDeleteLove your bootsale finds...all of them!...and really useful advice too..
ReplyDeleteThanks for calling by today and for your lovely comment...

Fantastic tips. I am off to England in a week so they will come very handy.

Fantastic tips! I am a total bootsale novice but seeing what amazing bargains so many bloggers come back with I definitely plan on trying a few out!
ReplyDeleteGreat tips, thankyou. My flatmate once got a pair of Russell and Bromley boots for just 20p, since finding that out she's been a good luck charm and I always find great items with her.
ReplyDelete(One slight addition that I might add on to your first tip is to wear quite close-fitting layers like a vest and leggings so that you can try clothes on more easily).
good tips here! Especially about getting in the floor to hunt, taking bags and I also like that you asked if it was worth haggling over 20p! I completely agree, if someone is welling to sell yo something you like for just pennies, give that lovely person the money, take you goods and be happy. x
ReplyDeleteI have that tray, mine's actually labelled "Donkey Boy" which made me snort out loud.
ReplyDeleteI dress as I always do, never down, head to toe in vintage. People assume I'm buying for myself and often bring stuff especially for me. This week a seller gave me her 1960s Mary Quant makeup bag because she knows how much I love late 60's stuff. x
Fantastic tips! I'm so happy its bootsale season now, I have some great ones near me in greater London. I think haggling is the best, it's a shame you can't do it on the highstreet. I love your gravy boat find too!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for stopping by at my blog!
ReplyDeleteI just love the tray and the top! Good findings!
xo from Holland ;-)
Those are great tips! Dress for the price you want to pay, I like this.
ReplyDeleteAlso: Wing attack, me too.
hi! love your blog :) i agree with your tips..i usually go with my sis and we always strike up chit chat with the seller and have a laugh then say oh how much is this?
ReplyDeleteThank you for following me on Twitter, i thought I would check out your blog. Really love what I see, and can't wait to read your future posts x
ReplyDeletei haven't been to a car boot fo so long! i miss them, in a weird way. you've really picked up some bargains here (:

Great tips! I wish we had boot sales here, so much easier than trawling around from house to house like we have to here.
ReplyDeleteExcellent post. I must get back into car booting......always seems to clash with taking the kids for their sunday morning swim.
ReplyDeleteI was Goal Attack or Goal shooter. I love Netball. I really miss playing :(
Such great tips! I am naturally very shy and often feel quite nervous asking a seller for a price, but I have figured the sooner I ask the sooner they will think of a price on the spot, than see me stood wondering, whilst they can bump up the price in their mind x
ReplyDeleteI always hide my bag in a "bag for life" and rarely bother washing my hair, scraping it back when I go to the boot sales!
ReplyDeleteVictoria xx
Great post. So it's ok for me to go car booting without showering first? Cool! No more guilt for me on a Sunday morning.

Hello! I've been lurking around your blog for a while now (not in a creepy stalker way or anything haha) but am only just getting round to commenting and following! This is a great tip list, I think my main problem is haggling...they can sense the fear I swear!x
ReplyDeletesadly the bootsales round our way are full of old person stuff. Not much good for clothes or accessories sadly. Great tips though, I usually take bags yet come bac emptyhanded.
ReplyDeleteVery useful, thanks! I've never been but I'd like to go.
ReplyDeleteOh and worryingly, I used to play in my netball club at school, playing what I thought was 'Win defence'- I didn't know it was Wing Attack!!!! 20 years on and I've just learned that!
That red flower top is absolutely gorgeous! I love the colors and the print!

I think common sense is a must at carboots. And friendlyness. I hear you on the "dress down" aspect - and I have heard of it before - but I always head out after a carboot - so no danger of me going in my skuzzers. This is where common sense comes in. I have a clear amount in my head that I am willing to pay for something and I stick to it. If someone wants to try and dupe me because I have on a frock and red lippy then best of luck to em. I walk away. Minus a bit of toot, granted - but thems the breaks.
ReplyDeleteGreat tips. I would also suggest making sure you have lots of small change, as it's hard to say something like "would you take £1?" when you then have to offer them a fiver and wait for change!
ReplyDeleteYou have some excellent tips here!

Fab boot sale in Bushey Watford on Sundays. Bought fab kitsch naked lady ashtray for 50p, handcarved wooden screen for my daughter's new flat for £10, 70s maxi dress £2, so many fantastic things. Can't wait to go back this Sunday xxx
ReplyDeleteLOL at I'll pay almost anything for a pretty saucer!! so true!!
ReplyDeletethanks for the tips!

Neat blog hun!
ReplyDeleteActually, I've noticed that so many dealers walking around like they were dirt poor and seller start to notice this.
I did for a while but nowadays I walk around in my cute 1950's outfits and the sellers love it, they think I'm a doll and I've never been so lucky with free and almost free stuff as now. A lot of sellers are trying to sell their grandparents stuff and they love the fact that these things will go to someone that will take good care of the stuff they remember from when they were kids, instead of some dealer who will take the piss on some vintage market the next weekend. Always look your best, be yourself and be polite.
Just found this postiii I am new at the blogging !! I love car boots and am so excited about what I will find, I look for things I can recycle, upcycle or use for my crafts mainly but am not averse to spoiling myself when I find a bargain in the clothes department.
ReplyDeleteHappy Booting xx
Thanks for the tips! I love car boot sales! Like a lot of people said, I have a price in mind and I'm not going to pay more for that. I think it also helps to know the vendors, the one I usually buy my stuf from is slashing her prices on Sundays, so I barely buy on Saturday. Unless its a unique find...
ReplyDeleteI don't find lots of stuff for 20p though, maybe it's because of the area?
All such brilliant tips!! Love the first one especially. I'm now inspired to plan my weekend purely around these types of events!
ReplyDeleteButton Brown xx
we have brill car boot sales here in France, for anyone visiting this summer, type videgreniers.org into a google search and it will pop up all the relevant ones in your area!
ReplyDeleteThanks for good tips, I love car boots, I have a uni ladies football jacket, I must get it out! I always have to shower after a car boot as the burger van at the car boot smells so gross! Good tip, don't eat from the van! hehehe.
ReplyDeleteI take my camera too, but sometimes feel shy about taking photos. My other half hates me going now to the car boot so I have to sneak out really early or late on the way to somewhere else. (then I have to hide all my secret finds!) :-)
